@rockdiamond - you're right, i am getting ahead of myself here. there's too much that i don't know to be judging diamonds based simply on the ASET's. it is tough. it's fun but stressful. seriously, thank you for grounding me again.

@gypsy - hoping you feel better. thanks for your suggestions. you said that you wouldn't have chosen those three to send to ASET. how do you decide that? how much weight does the revolving picture play on how you choose what to send in? what do you look for in the GIA report? i'm looking at the diamonds you suggested, but i can't figure out how you decided on those.

Hi zcher,
You're welcome!
Luckily, this is not brain surgery. Judging a diamond is based on your subjective opinion. There's definitely badly cut diamonds out there, but the reason they are badly cut is generally pretty easy to see.
Dark areas, dull areas, stones that look much smaller than other diamonds of similar weight are a few of the things you'll see on a badly cut diamond.

My personal opinion is that reading through pages long threads from last year is not going to get you anywhere closer to feeling comfortable with your choices. Seeing more stones in person is really the only way. Take the stones away from the bright store spotlights, and look at them in more realistic lighting.

Yeah, not the best performers.

I've been sick so I haven't been around. But I wouldn't have sent any of those to ASET.

Ask them to make an exception for you and send a couple of these to ASET .

They are better performers.

Hi Gypsy- Just curious, but if you like the stone why are you returning it?

^ I'm the PSer who returned the 1.01ct D-VS1 cushion... it is a beautiful diamond, and the Aset gives a good indication of its brightness.

(I returned it primarily because the dimensions to my persnickety eye resulted in a "not quite square, not quite rectangle" shape, and I switched to a BN H&A cushion that really meets my particular preferences. Related threads:

thanks marymm! i found your thread earlier, but because of you, i just put a BN signature H&A on hold. haha... i don't quite know how to read BN gcal report/photos, but i tried to use what you described in your thread. you are quite happy with the BN diamond, i'm hoping the one i put on hold is beautiful too. would you tell me what you think about these two? did you end up getting an ASET for your BN diamond? or if you found a better one, i'm all ears. thanks!

Hi zcher82 - really both of those BN cushions look like solid choices.

Personally, I find the GCAL report/images that come with the BN Signature Cushion to be sufficient, so will not bother with an Aset myself.

Although in theory and on paper, the JA 1.01ct D-VS1 cushion had all the bells & whistles (meaning, met my specs at the time) - it wasn't until it was in my hands and I'd had it for a few weeks that I realized the "not square, not rectangle" thing was going to be a major issue for me. And, once I conceded that issue, I realized too the JA cushion was very bright with a nice facet pattern but did not have the sharper on/off kind of performance I wanted in my own cushion.

So, although I had ignored the BN Signature Cushions in the past, thinking they'd be "just like an H&A MRB, but with corners" (and I'd previously concluded that H&A MRBs are just not my thing, going so far as to sell my WF ACA), I decided to buy a BN cushion and see for myself. And, 5 days in of having it in my hot little hands, I still am loving it at every angle and in every light.

So I echo all of the posters who have said, find some solid candidates with good return policies, and see them for yourself - and just because a cushion Asets out well (or has a good GCAL report), it doesn't mean you automatically favor it - it just means it has a good Aset/GCAL - whether you find it pleasing to your eyes is the final (and most significant) test.

Never mine to keep. It was an experiment. I can't say more, unfortunately, at this time.

Nope. No trade badge. Everything with Andrey's okay and approval.

Just an experiment. As a consumer.

thanks everyone for all the help and advice and guidance. it has been very fun to learn and study and research. as of now, i'm really liking that second BN H&A diamond. it's just outside my price range, but nothing i can't deal with. i've got it on hold for 48 hours and then we'll see where it goes.
