Hello all,
I'm a new (mostly dumbfounded) buyer, looking for a engagement diamond. My lovely fiance-to-be has left me total creative control of this task, what she was thinking I'll never know. Anyways, I've donw quite a bit of reading and have settled on cushion cuts as my interpretation of what would be best for her. I've picked out one from bluenile as an example of what I think is a good diamond. Bluenile is attempting to procure one single solitary photo for me as of now but the stone is in another country of course so this will take a while. There aren't any shops in my area that are even close to reasonable for their prices, so I am forced to make an online purchase despite what I'd like to do.

After going through all the info available I've come accross a diamond that I think is very close to what I have been looking for I've followed the general guidelines on proportions and such to the best of my ability and I feel like this particular stone falls within a very good paramater. They have been suprisingly accomodating though, and I am waiting on a photo to be supplied in the next few days (why this isn't standard is still a mystery to me, but such is life). Anyways, the stones GIA report number is: 2161596735

The proportions fall closely into my understanding of "very good" range for cushion cuts. Table% and depth% are (in my estimation) within a very good range. My concerns are with the color and the and the "natural" mark near the gurdle. I've honestly not been able to see many cushion cuts up close to compare, but I've seen several round cuts with J color and I cannot pick up the yellow, so my question is if the J color is really an issue with these cushion cut stones (as in, would it be more noticeable)? Overall, does this report look promising for this stone? Is there something about this report that I should be considereing more before moving forward? The price seems very reasonable for the size, which is (sadly) what worries me; I'm assuming if it seems like a reasonable buy to my layman eyes, there must be something I'm overlooking

The fluoresence is good, depth and table % look very good, the VVS2 rating makes me unconcerned with the small feather, the L/W ratio is "decent", the color is the only issue I'm seeing....what am I missing on this stone? I fear I'm making a fools oversight and recognize I'm flying fairly blindly attempting to buy from a big online store, but this stone seems good to me. I would love your oppinion!

Thank you so much!

I should also probably say what I plan to do overall with the setting; I am looking for something relatively low profile as she does wear latex gloves for work and I would like to have something she isn't constantly needing to remove to glove up. Nothing like a halo setting since I dont like the big look of that. I thought this setting with the four prongs was nice looking and had a lot of the elements I was going for (minus the butterfly thing): http://www.simongjewelry.com/wps/portal/SimonG/products/NR493/RING

I am planning to make the thing in rose gold (confirmed with her that that is ok, I know it's a love/hate look for many people). and I know that she likes bands that are thicker, but not very thick (helpful, I know..). I'm not sure if cushions generally look ok in the style that I posted above, but that's what I've liked so far.

basically I have a very vague idea about what I'm doing, if you can't already tell.

Sorry, you've got the process backwards.

Absolutely no opinions on a cushion (or most other fancies) can be made without a picture. It is nearly pointless to shop by "paper" and then ask for a picture; 9x out of 10, you will be disappointed with the picture.

Nope. You've got it backward.

Unless you are talking about a Blue Nile Signature Cushion-- one of their hearts and arrows cushions, then you shouldn't be shopping at Blue Nile.

You can't buy a cushion from the lab report.

Ah, I figured starting with the report as a point of reference would be best with these. This one I've pointed out isn't one that I was comitted on, more of an example of what I thought would be a good start point to see if I am looking at things right... which I guess I am not!
I've only seen a handful of cushions in person, and they have all been crummy so I'm at a bit of a loss for how to pick them properly. I've also misspelled my thread title, today is a dumb day!

The sites that provide pictures of cushions (and sometimes more than one style) are Good Old Gold, Brilliantly Engaged, Victor Canera, James Allen, and Brian Gavin. Some of these will have mostly very well cut diamonds, and then you'll have a vendor like JA who carries a full range of qualities, great to terrible. The downside of cushions is that they are often deeper than a similar weight round, so I sort of prefer them with a halo to boost size a little.
