A good quality (not top but average quality) moonstone should have as much blue sheen as possible covering the top of the cabochon when viewed against the hand. It is sort of like opals; vendors use a black background because it makes the blue sheen show up easily but in doing so, they don't look as nice once set and worn unless you use a black backing. For me, your moonstone is wonderfully translucent (almost transparent) but is almost devoid of blue sheen without a lot of help.

When I was searching for a moonstone for my ring, I found that the stones looked a ton better when not set directly on your skin. You don't even need a black backing, but just lift it up a few mm or however high you plan on setting it and decide from there. My moonstone is wonderfully transparent like yours is and looked exactly like yours when it was directly on my finger/hand, but when raised off the skin, the blue is in your face.

My stone is now set, and it does not have any sort of dark or black backing.

ETA--on the last page of my SMTB thread, I posted some photos of how the stone looked loose in case you're interested. you had two loose stones in that picture, which one did you end up using in the ring? the smaller one on top or the bigger one on the bottom?
