How is the Cut On This Yellow Sapphire?

It appears to have a very large window in the middle (area where the color isn't reflected back to the eye-- if you put a page underneath the stone, you would be able to read text through the middle of the stone). In my opinion, it is not well-cut.

That has a window too, so it's not well cut either. Sapphires are usually cut to conserve weight, rather than for beauty. The color is decent on those stones, but the cutting is not.

Thanks for the information! I appreciate it.

So cut is more forgivable on sapphires than diamonds? Color is more important?

How much so?

Well it depends. Some people are all about cut, and some people are all about color, and some people have to have both. :$$):

White diamonds are all about cut because they don't have color, and therefore, maximizing sparkle and brilliance is really important.

If you're looking for a well-cut yellow sapphire, how about this one? Not sure what all your particulars are, but I thought I'd chime in. Excuse the interruption.

Here are the windows everyone is talking about. The dead area in the centre. Cut isn't as important as colour generally but there is no reason to settle for a bad cut if good cuts are available. The Finewater one looks very nice.

Be wary with NSC, some have had good experiences with them but most have had bad.

Not a sapphire, but his yellow chrysoberyl on his site is large, well cut, and a nice yellow.

The 2ct: http://www.finewatergems.com/new-gemstones.html

Op, chrysoberyl is a good option for a yellow stone. It is durable, has good lustre, still quite affordably priced compared to other gems and is much less likely to have been treated than sapphire. It is worth considering unless your heart is set on sapphire.
