Hi Everyone! I've been looking into have a diamond set into a onyx or quartz cab but I can't find much information on the process or who even cuts stones like this anymore.

I'm not sure where you'd get a traditional one ... but I've seen "new age" discs sold on thongs that I think would work quite well for this sort of setting. Hm, now *I* want to experiment and see how that would work ....

The onyx is either bezeled in place or held by the diamond setting itself. The hole is cut with a diamond drill and the diamond setting should fit quite snugly. This sort of work has been increasingly popular in art jewelry and Jim Dunakim is a master. Michael Boyd, I believe, also uses this kind of setting on occasion.

A good cabber should be able to cut a onyx for this project. You won't see it listed for sale since it does have to be custom cut, to fit both the design you want and the diamond. The best would be to have your jeweler design the ring and give detailed measurements to the lapidary.
