Hello everyone,

I love the forums here and have learned quite a bit about diamonds and gemstones. I'd really appreciate your opinions and advice on my situation.

I'm shopping for engagement rings, but I've never really been a fan of diamond engagement rings since it's so traditional. My girlfriend's birthstone is sapphire, and I've bought her pieces of sapphire jewelry before which she has loved. I was thinking that for an engagement ring, I'd really like to find a Padparadscha sapphire for the center stone.

There seems to be quite a lot of debate about the "perfect" color for one of these sapphires but from the descriptions (and in my mind's eye) I see a tropical sunrise/sunset with a 50/50 mix of orange and pink but not too "bright" or "saturated". I've found this particular example and wondered what people thought of it as far as look and pricing. I really appreciate your thoughts.

I also looked at one that a previous poster had mentioned in another thread.

Anything you could tell me about these or Padparadscha shopping in general would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

If you are serious about getting a real padparadscha, then I would not take a vendor's word for it, but make sure the stone gets a lab reprot from AGL stating it as such. For example, the first one you looked at looks like it has a fair amount of brown in it.

That's actually a pretty famous Tino Hammid photo of a padparadscha which I believe was first published in David Federman's book, "Modern Jeweler's Consumer Guide to Colored Gemstones." It was probably in one of the Modern Jeweler magazines when it was in print. This book is a compilation of several of his articles from Modern Jeweler. Yes, I've been collecting gems THAT long to remember. LOL!
