A group shot and a few vendor handshot photos.
I would say Dana's handshot photos are very accurate. handshot photos are almost the same with my photos. If I buy any more stones in the future, I would refer to handshot photos only.

Kiki: looks a lovely hue. How is it in different lighting conditions? Is it always so magnificent?

Don't you just hate it when people don't come back to answer your questions? :knockout:

Ha ha, vacation maybe? Just when I've forgotten about the question, I'm sure she'll pop back up with an answer!

OK..one more.

14k YG 5-stone tsavorite ring from Yvonne Raley. I would say that the colors of the ring in the vendor photos are very accurate, and it's even more sparkly and vibrant in person. The only thing I would say is that the gold shank feels a little light / thinner than what I expected (but then again I am used to very solid gold pieces).

Vendor shot.

I agree with Minous, your pic shows that lovely glow for which those Cuprian Tourms are famed... and the tsav ring is pretty, pretty! I wonder if the shank is thinner on a new band because it helps lower cost of setting? I have a vintage platinum ring and the shank is sooo thin in the back I figured it was sized at some time and of course it's about 80 years old....

Quick photo dump - have to dash and run! But I just picked up the other ring I ordered from Yvonne Raley.

Chryso and mahenge spinel 5-stone stacker. Love the hexagonal bezel -- reminds me of a honeycomb. Luscious. I LOVE this ring, it is just so sparkly, candylike and FUN! :)

Yes! You have a good eye! It is very transparent and I like the sharp star. But I returned it because it was too pink. I don't fancy pink colours.

Vendor's pic is first. Mine are last two. It's a Lake Baringo, Kenya ruby no heat, .59 carat and sparkly in the sun.

Thanks Mochiko. I missed a lovely little pair in June and he had told me he had some rough if I was interested. Was I interested!!! Couldn't resist even though it's smaller than I like (size 7 or 7.5 finger). I think it will be a beautiful little distraction. Speaking of which, my sister laughed when I told her it was "small". I explained the topic a few years back that "5 ct was the new 3 ct" in the diamonds section.

Incidentally, I think the first one is in sun... the second one with flash (by reflection on the fabric.... I can't always tell if the flash goes off).

Here is my fancy purple unheated sapphire 3.37 ct, 8.7 x 7.0 x 6.8mm, VVS clarity, from Finewatergems. I was surprised that the photo accurately describes what the sapphire looks like. I asked for videos and received two that gave me a good mental image of what to expect. But the vendor's picture is most descriptive about the blend of color in this particular gem.

This is a stone I bought three or four years ago, I forget. 1.7 carat spinel from Tanzania.

The vendor photo is actually more accurate. My new camera is washing out reds. ;(

Vendor description:--

Tourmaline (cut by Paul Burton; purchased from Dana Reynolds at Master Cut Gems)
Origin: Afghanistan
Weight: 2.58 carat
Size: 8.6 mm X 6 mm deep
Clarity: Vs2
Cut: round brilliant
Color: neonish mint green
Treatment: none- natural
Original link: http://www.mastercutgems.com/preview.php?cat=294&id=7829

Vendor photos:
30399.jpg 30397.jpg

My photos:
*caveat - it was a very hazy day so everything looks a bit yellow and icky.. I'll try to take more representative photos soon.
It doesn't appear very neon to me, but it is very sparkly / dispersive and the cut is excellent. I would say it's a very light sea green with a hint of blue. Depending on lighting it can show a hint of greenish yellow.

Thanks Minous!! :) it's not quite what I was expecting (was hoping for a bit more saturation) but it's still very beautiful and I'm liking it more and more each day.
I'm torn on how to set it... I'd like to play up the bluish green color so I wonder which type of gold would work best...white gold might wash it out.. Will try to get around to starting a separate thread on this..:lol:

I have no luck at all interpreting photographs of gems. The two I have gotten so far have been much darker and less saturated than I had expected from the photographs. :(

Vendor Photo:
From this, I thought this Montana Sapphire would be teal.
vendor_photo_-_montana_sapphire.jpg

Owner Photo:
In hand, it was black/slate grey-blue. Most of the time, it was just black.
buyer_photo_-_montana_sapphire.jpg

The next purchase I made, I tried to pick something that looked lighter in the photograph, but again I didn't get what I expected.

Vendor Photo:
From this, I thought this Nigerian Sapphire would be blue and yellowish-green.
vendor_photo_-_nigerian_sapphire.jpg

Owner Photo:
In hand, it was black with desaturated hints of slate blue and barely yellow. This photo makes it look more colorful than it is. Again, most of the time, this sapphire is black. It sparkles because of the good cutting, but the sparkles do not have color.
buyer_photo_-_nigerian_sapphire.jpg

I don't know how to proceed from here. How bright and vivid does the vendor photograph have to be to get something that isn't black and colorless in person?
