Questions about pink sapphire ring

Hi there, I hope someone can help tell me about this family ring. It was valued forty years ago at £500 (UK pounds) and we were told it is a pink sapphire and diamond ring. If anyone has any information about the style or time period that would be great. All I know about it is my grandma bought it from a second hand shop about 45 years ago, it was sold as an amethyst stone for £50.
Can anyone guess at the rough carat size from the pics?
There is a hallmark saying 8CT, is it likely to really be a sapphire set with that metal?
Can it be replated safely? And what metals could be used if so?
Any rough estimates on what it might be worth now a days?

If you are unsure about it take it to a good appraiser. It is really beautiful ring!!!

I will have to find an appraiser then, was hoping someone on here would have an idea about it before then though but never mind , my curiosity will have to wait!
