I visited a well known local jeweler yesterday and fell in love with this ring. It is incredible IRL! The sapphires are not original to the piece, there were two diamonds which were removed and sold.

The color of the sapphires is rich royal blue. They have a great deal of sparkle and are american brilliant cut. They let me go outside and those sapphires absolutely sang in the sunlight. They are 1.50ct each Ceylon origin. Heat but no other treatments.
The business owner is a specialist in gemstones. At previous visits he opened his vault and brought out tray after tray of unset top color stones, many had gem briefs, GIA reports. Loved showing me the rare ones, Parabia & Mandarian Garnets.
So the two sapphires don't have reports but he said there is zero other treatments besides heat.
He has gemstones featured in the Field Museum Grainger Hall of Gems.

I believe him and the ring is a gorgeous piece. I have a deposit on it.

Any thoughts from the color stoners on this?

No TL, it's Richard Cheng at Merry Richards. I know you probably wouldn't buy without an AGL gem brief. I would have preferred a report on the stones as well, but they are bezel set and he wouldn't dismantle the ring at this point.
Because this is a one of a kind piece I think I can live with him telling me the stones are heat only. I looked up comparable size & color Ceylon sapphires on Gemfix and Africa Gems and I'm basically paying for the sapphires at the price he quoted. I'm guessing he has had it for a while, the majority of his pieces are classic three stone or halo gem rings. They also carry all of the top brands for erings, Tacori, SimonG, etc. So this particular piece is unique and may have been waiting for the right buyer for a while.

How does the color look to you?
To me they were blue. I didn't see gray or violet. But I'm very new to CS. I guess I just want some reassurance that I should go through with the purchase.

Ohhhh!!!! I know Richard of "Merry Richards." They used to set my gems, and my platinum scatter band is from their store (custom made). I didn't realize he had pieces at the Field Museum. I've been to his store in Glenview many times. He also has one in Oak Brook too I think. I also have a Tacori style ring from them that I set with a yellow diamond. Very nice jewelry.

Enjoy your beautiful ring. The sapphires are lovely. If I were you, I would obtain an AGL report on them just because treatments are always changing with the times, and if you get a lab report that says, "this stone is heated only, and it was evaluated on a said date," it will be reassurance for the future. I think AGL will evaluate set stones. I know GIA will if AGL doesn't.

You have no idea how happy I am that you have worked with Richard!!! And they made your gorgeous band, the one with the colored diamonds? I found this at the Oak Brook store. I have pics of tons of other rings from there, maybe I'll add those to this thread, emeralds, rubys, FY & FIY diamonds. Such a great store to visit! I'll check into the gem brief options. Thank you :D

They didn't make that ring, it was made down the street from them (AM Lee Jewelers, also in Glenview). Richard made a platinum scatter band for me. :))

So a different band, it sounds like you're happy with it, so that's good :)) I'll have to do a field trip up to Glenview to see Richards other store and visit AM Lee one of these days. Thanks again for your response!

Thanks and yes, I wear my pt scatter band all the time. It's very hefty and nicely made.

The Glenview store is much smaller, less stock than the Oakbrook store, so I'm not sure if it will be worth the trip, unless you're close by. The Oakbrook store is their main store

AM Lee doesn't have much in the way of fine colored gems. I typically go to him because he's extremely reasonable for custom work like mounting gems, and he gave me a decent price for making that colored diamond band. Lots of people go to him to fix watches, and do custom work. If you have some gems to be mounted though, "Mr. Lee" is your man.

NP, he's very good at setting delicate and softer stones, as many jewelers are only used to diamonds.

I know there's an annual antique show at Arlington Racetrack every year, and they also have some gorgeous emerald pieces, if you like to look, rather than buy. I am a stickler about always getting an AGL report for expensive emeralds. I love emeralds, and the ones you posted above are lovely.

ETA: I love your eternity band.

Do you recall when the show is? I would love to go to that. The huge emerald was so beautiful  I have no idea if those had AGL reports, I didn't ask because they were so out of reach for me. I have been looking at emeralds on a few sites, I hope to get one someday. Maybe next year. It will be small, like my wallet :))

Thanks for liking my band, I'm embarrassed by how dirty my rings look in these pics, oops! I just cleaned them a couple of days ago in the ultra sonic.

The sapphire ring is very pretty - talk about some major finger coverage! the ring strikes me as antique and edgy in some way that I cant put my finger on at the same time - very cool! and, you can have them evaluated by AGL while mounted in the ring, if you want the paperwork. Sounds like you had a great trip - those emeralds are to die for!

I don't, I'm sorry. There's an antique show at Rosemont Convention Center too I believe and there's some gorgeous antique jewelry pieces, including emeralds. Some of the most beautiful emerald pieces I ever saw were in antique jewelry. I tried a five carat emerald on at one of those shows (I think Rosemont) around 20 years ago, and it was $250,000. It was the most gorgeous and clean emerald I have ever seen IRL. I love the eyecandy at those antique shows. Your sapphire ring has a beautiful Art Deco design.

TL is correct, AGL will do a report on set stones. It is only modestly more expensive than unset stones.

So I showed these pictures to my sons, my older son is 22 and said are you kidding mom, it looks like something a wizard or old medieval king would wear, you can't wear that! He was totally laughing at me. Younger son thinks it's cool and that is does look like a wizard ring so he wants to wear it for fun

DH was with me at the store and thought or at least said he thinks it's beautiful, but maybe he just said that to get me out of the store ;))

So here's the next question for all of you, assuming the sapphires are amazing, would you wear this ring? Or am I crazy to buy it?

Do you love it? Will you wear it a lot and enjoy it?

What do you love about it? The design? The sapphires?

If you're having doubts, can you find another ring that has the attributes that you like about this one, but more to your taste?

I most certainly would wear that ring, and I would wear any fine Art Deco jewelry.

The questions you need to ask yourself are the following, despite what your husband and son think.

Do YOU like it?
Is the price fair for what it is?
Can you afford it.

If you answered "no" to any of the above questions, then I would second guess buying it.

The sapphires are a very nice color & well matched. Personally, I think that ring would look just FABULOUS with jeans! Talk about cool! If the price is affordable & you really like it, go for it. As an added plus, if you ever tire of the setting, you can use the stones in a new one.

You guys are making me wish I lived in your area for the jewelers & shows! I live in a gem desert.

Thanks ES, I agree it is edgy, I admire all of the antique jewelry but never thought it was me. I bought a 1920s art deco ring which I sold about 1 year later. But this ring, IRL just knocks my socks off! It's so bold, I don't know if I'm cool enough to wear it ;))

And yes those emerald rings are TDF!

Preg- I love that it's different, the minute I saw it in the case I said I have to try that on! It is a showstopping ring, the amount of diamonds, the intricate details, the milgrain. The sapphires are so bright and beautiful. My doubts are over. :))

Thanks JF! The sapphires are just amazing, when I took the ring outside in the sun the color was just incredible, I was swooning! Hell, in honor of the ring if they had a fainting couch I would have fainted :cheeky: I would have loved to see the two diamonds that came out of this setting but think the sapphires just push it IDK, over the top but in a good way. I am getting a great price :))
Come visit us in Chicago sometime! We're a fun crowd!

Younger son just said-hey mom show me the wizard ring again, proclaimed it extremely cool & said I should get it.
DH woke up before me today and has addressed me The Wizard since I got out of bed ;))
I would never take fashion advice from either kid or my husband for that matter so no matter what they say that puppy is mine

The questions you need to ask yourself are the following, despite what your husband and son think.

Do YOU like it?
Is the price fair for what it is?
Can you afford it.

If you answered "no" to any of the above questions, then I would second guess buying it.

YES , YES, YES!

Thanks Catmom! Good to know you think it's not too elaborate for my very casual lifestyle. The sapphires are such an amazing color.
I plan on buying it, have a terrible time second guessing myself on things, but this is so unique, can't pass it up :))
