I would go ahead send it to a lab to take a look at it. You do not need to unmount the stone. If they determine it to be synthetic, then there will be no further testing. If it is indeed a ruby, then they will tell you the treatment and the level of treatment, which helps immensely in knowing how to care for your new ring and how safe it is to repolish the ruby (which needs to be removed from the setting for this work).

Really inexpensive but does not tell you the extent of treatment.

Pricing for a more thorough verification.

the aglgemlab gembrief isnt useable, it limits up to 3 cts.

I will use the GIA lab and send it out next week. These places are busy it seems, 30 day turn around time.

I emailed the jewelers of america. Is Jewelers association the same as Jewelers of america?
This is irrelevant if you are in the US. I suggested it because I thought you were in the UK.

The first thing to do is confirm what the stone is by sending it to a lab.

Then if you decide to have the stone polished, it would be worth asking Jerry Newman if he can work his magic on it. He is the "go to" person for most PS people who want a gem recut for better performance. Put his name in the Search field (top right on PS) and read some of the threads or visit his website.

Some better pictures using the macro function on your camera would help.

Try this email address for Jerry Jerry Newman <[email protected]>

His spam filter and email are notoriously iffy.

I sent him an email alerting him to your attempt to contact him.

I found a phone number on google for him and we spoke on the phone. Very nice person. I sent him pictures and will be sending him the ring to see what he can do.
