Hi all,

I'm new to this and this is my first post.
Basically I have decided its time to pop the big question!
Through 2 months of looking at jewellery store (Melbourne) and reading forums I have decided to purchase from James Allen.

My budget is $4000 and I have a fair idea of the style of setting she will like but when it comes to the diamond I get a bit confused!
Am I best to go with bigger carat and a little less quality or smaller better quality diamond?
At the moment I'm thinking the best quality princess shaped .5 carat with as good a cut/clarity etc I can.

Any advice would be much appreciated as I'm keen to get it right the first time as I don't want to have to send back to modify.

Thanks in advance.

Which setting are you getting? How much does it leave for a center stone? What shape do you want?

Don't compromise on cut. There's flexibility on color. You don't really need more than H color. And eyeclean SI1 clarity is enough. :wavey:

$4000 for the stone? USD? I looked on James Allen for you, and .5 ct SI1 diamonds are selling for far less than US$4000.

I think the budget includes the setting.

Yes $4000 including setting. The setting I'm looking at is a vintage style 14k white gold pave flower. $1790 which would leave about $2000 for centre stone. I'm guessing all prices on James Allen are USD so I need to take that into account and tax I'll have to pay on it.

Okay. So I'm trying to help you, but I'm not getting clear information from you.

You need to do your calculations to figure out taxes and import duties. The setting. And then give us a firm bottom line number for the stone ONLY in USD, please.

Sorry as I said I don't know anything about this. To make it easier I'm willing to spend $2000 USD on the stone. )princess cut.
Which will leave me about $1700 USD on the setting.

that particular setting should probably have at least a 1 ct princess to look right, it is 4.9mm wide.
