From the BBC news Africa edition.

The "exceptional" 29.6 carat blue diamond is the latest rare stone to be found in the Cullinan mine

I suspect it will be a while before it comes to market, but wow, WHAT A COLOR!

Is the company allowed to buy insurance for the rough before the cutter cuts the diamond?

Interesting looking darkish spots towards the top - do you reckon they're inclusions or perhaps just the lighting?

I could see that being turned into a cushion/radiant as currently sat east/west.

No. And being responsible for choosing from the options available in that diamond would make me crazy too. The shape is not at all conducive to a large round brilliant, but there might be several stones of different shapes inside there waiting to be released.

The owner will spend a lot of time consulting with his cutter making decisions, and those decisions will make huge differences in the total price yielded for the diamond.

Perhaps Paul Slegers could come comment on the choices that might be involved. He may or may not want to even venture an opinion on something like this, but he certainly understands the pressures involved far more than I do.

Until all the inclusions are mapped you can't tell what shape will work best.
I see what could be several large fractures.
My guess is a custom design specific to that rough and avoiding problem inclusions will be used.
Then smaller stones cut from what is left over.

I wonder where the rest of it is. It looks like it was broke off a bigger piece.
Wonder if its out there or turned into dust in the recovery process.

Karl,

When I was at GIA as a student in 1975, I was told that it was surmised that the part of the Cullinan that was recovered was actually only a small fraction of the original crystal. I have always hoped that the rest of it would be unearthed someday.

If done so, they'd cut it to maximize color.

Paul or Yoram will have to say for sure but in an article about cutting another large diamond they said it was insured by Lloyds of London before cutting.
However you never know if the reporter got it right.

Lloyd's will insure anything. Literally any crazy thing you come up with. The underwriters decide what the risk of loss is and then they offer it to their members. It's just a question of whether the insured is willing to pay the price the members will accept.

Based on the images & the price realized, it is aimed at one major stone with perhaps a few much smaller satellites.
Auction prices for such rocks range at around $1.3-1.7 Mil per carat. Yield IMO could range within 30-48%+- (e.g. 10-15 cts polished) depending on the shape and quality of cut.

The owners must have visualized something more significant to be profitable.

Insurance wise..., I learned "almost" everything can be insured depending on mathematics.
Negatives..., almost never a complete total lost & deductible usualy kicks it out of economic sense.

Cutting blues is extremely complicated & risky, a grey secondary can always surprise the most experience cutter.
Blues are extremely sensitive to heat caused in the cutting process and must be cut by a handful of cutters geered towards such a project.

I wish the new owners lots of luck, creativity will be the name of the game on this one IMO.

Here are some more revealing shots more of the shape of the rough:
