I asked David Dawson some time ago to cut two pieces of rough that I had. A tourmaline I had bought from Jeff Graham of faceters.com about ten years ago and really wanted it cut in one of his designs. The other a tanzanian spinel. I did not specify how to cut either of them aside from using Jeff's designs. My only instruction was to cut for best stone, not weight or size. The tourmaline was around 14 carats, but had a veil which had to be cut out. The final weight is 3.25. The spinel started at 8.08 carat and is now 2.75, 8.2mm. The finished stones arrived last week, but today is the first day I have had to look at them. And we are having a huge snow storm. Oh well.

Fabulous colour and saturation and worth the long wait for perfection :appl:

Lol! I love your pics. So, it was YOU who commissioned those. I saw his pics and asked if they were available, but alas... I have a cushion pink-purple spinel from him, and even though it doesn't necessarily perform well for the camera, IRL it's alllll sparkles.

More pictures of both of those beauties, please! :naughty:

Wow, those look pretty darn good - I can only imagine what they're gonna look like when its not in the middle of a snowstorm! :cheeky:

Seriously looking forward to more of your great photography - perhaps Murry will feel like modeling...

Can we have pics of the snow too? I know this is probably sacrilege for you right now, but I miss the snow. I will spare you the details of the temperature here...

What are your plans for these beauties?!

Gorgeous cutting & colors! I'm surprised the red one doesn't melt the snow just by its own colored heat. Love the deep green too. Hey, where are the flowers?

It is colder today. Ten degrees, but sky is clear.

Thanks for the toes-up flowers, VL, and the flour. Heh heh, I'm cute. Your stones are beautiful, though. The spinel just reaches out & grabs the viewer, but I really love that green pear. It's like looking down into a deep pool. Profound green, is what it is. The cutting is marvelous -- I keep looking at the facet meet-points that show & licking my chops.

Stay warm, you & Murry.

Beautiful stones and great photo shoot.

I wish we got snow here. I live in San Francisco and once when I was like 5 it actually snowed and stayed on the ground.

As always, I love your photography. The stones are stunning and I can't even say that I have a favorite. I love Laurie's description of the greenish blue being profound. Yes, profound. They are perfect color complements. Passionate red, and profound green.

All these pics were taken with my iphone 4s, no supplementary lens. I do have an app called pro cam that was about a dollar and is a much better driver than the built in camera app.

I came for the spinel, but came back for that tourmaline.

Looks like an Andes Candes.
