I just learned that Duke Ellington did a jazz version of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker suite. It.is.AMAZING

I have the CD of that, Davi. I think I bought it last year based on a discussion on Pricescope, but I may have heard of it somewhere else. I heard it played on the radio a few days ago. It is so clever! I especially like the title, "Sugar Rum Cherry".

I need to listen to all the songs on this entire thread, but I love the classic Christmas carols and I love discovering new ones! I did hear Pentatonix for the first time this year, and they were pretty awesome!

But here is my contribution for a beautiful new Christmas song for this year (new lyrics to existing tune):

"A Hallelujah Christmas" by Cloverton

ds-

I am so excited to see that you have posted something new for me to listen to! I have been listening to Christmas music on and off all day and had a few thoughts about songs I could share here now. One I definitely decided that I wanted to mention is Emmylou Harris', "Light of the Stable". It was recorded years ago, but it is new to me. I do not know if a recording is available on YouTube, although I will look. I just bought it, and also her rendition of, "The First Noel" from iTunes. I just fell in love with them. (But, then, I always loved Emmylou Harris!)

Another song I felt absolutely compelled to purchase is available on YouTube. It is, "Carol of the Bells" done by Mark O'Connor. His violin (or fiddle) combined with the bells is truly amazing! I will post a link to that. And I must go listen to the song you posted. I will be up all night!

Here are two songs from Emmylou Harris' Christmas album, "Light of the Stable". One is the title song and the other is the classic, "The First Noel". I really love, "Light of the Stable". I do not know why it is not more well-known. I think it should be played as often as, "Rudolph, The Red-Nosed Reindeer"!

I've been looking for a different version of Silent Night. My current favorite is by Jewel.

What I want: No loud singing for the first verse. All three verses. In English. Sung by a woman.

Very hard to find another version (other than Jewel) that does the song right, IMO. But I'd love any suggestions.

Martina McBride's O Holy Night is my all time favorite. And my husband's is the Big Crosby and David Bowie version of Little Drummer Boy.

I am really glad you posted this, ds. I enjoyed the song very much and never would have known about it at all if you hadn't posted that link. From the comments left, I derived that apparently some people didn't like it that Cloverton used Leonard Cohen's song simply to sing about Christmas because it had been a song about a man being broken by life, a complicated song. I guess to them the song had personal meaning. It didn't to me, obviously, however. So I was just glad to be exposed to it and found it beautiful.

I am easily talked into doing "light research" (the Internet equivalent of "light housekeeping", research that does not require real work). You almost got me involved in in a, "Silent Night" search there, Gypsy! But it is too close to Christmas and I have too many things left to do to focus on one song right now! I am lucky to be able to be at the computer at all this morning when I have so much to do!

I'm not exacty sure what your version of "right" is, but I went searching and found 3 versions that fit your criteria. I definitely know what my favorite is, but let me know which one is yours.

The other group I see getting a lot of attention right now is the Piano Guys; I am very much enjoying the whole album "A Family Christmas" as it pops up in my Pandora feed. Here's the first one I heard this year:

This is the most beautiful version of, "Jingle Bells" ever recorded. (In fact it may be the only beautiful recording of "Jingle Bells" ever recorded!)

Thank you all for keeping this thread going! I have been consumed with work (I have my wife to murder, my country's 500th anniversary to plan...I'm swamped.), but I am listening to each and every song posted!

Ellen, thank you so much for the Sissel song and great minds think alike, aren't the Piano Guys fun?

Merry Christmas!

Earlier in this thread I posted a link to Emmylou Harris' recording of, "Light of the Stable". I have become truly enamoured of the song the way I became enamoured of, "Here With Us" by Joy Williams the first year I heard it.

I have been listening to Selah's version of the song and also Tara Maclean's, both of which have something different from Emmylou Harris' version to offer. I decided to put these other two versions up here, too, so that you could pick from among all three!

Yeah, this just confirms I need to quit posting. Too distracted and too little patience to deal with threads responsibly anymore. Sorry DS! :wavey:

Please don't say that, Ellen. It makes me feel so sorry that I said anything. I have so many faults. Maybe God will lift them. I do pray for that. Honestly. I love you.

Oh Deb, do NOT feel bad! I didn't say that because of anything you said. I said it because I clearly haven't been paying attention in this thread. (or a few others in the past for that matter) My heart is simply not in posting like it was (and it shows). I care about all of you more than you know, but my time here really is about done. It's not you, it's me. No worries. ;))

*hugs back*
