Hi Folks

Can someone help me put a value to this Ruby . We've had this Ruby for a while now , but don't have a clue to its actual worth ?

I've had a IGI report done on it and the information was as follows.

Variety : Natural Ruby

Oval Mixed Cut

1196.10 Carats

Purplish Red / Opaque

Natural Inclusion Pattern

Free of Treatment

Were not sure of its Origin !

We have spoken to Gemologists in London, Zurich and Dubai and all seem to very different views ????

Faz101,
Very complicated to offer up a value. This may sound snarky, but it is worth what someone is willing to pay. Until that point, various gemologists or appraisers from various countries are only able to offer "their opinion". Gems of this size are rarely seen, and fewer are known about AFTER a sale. So there is very little information to go on.

Sorry to be a disappointment, but what you are asking for is a nebulous $$$ figure.
I truly hope you find this helpful.

Fwiw, to me the value of corundum is its depth of color and clarity/transparency. I would have little interest in a ruby like that, despite its large size. That said, I am not a collector of mineral samples so don't know if a collector might find this specimen, due to its size, interesting at all. Good luck.

Hi,

I am making a comment on the opaqueness of the stone.

I was at the Paris Hotel in LKas Vegas and looked around the jewelery store off the casino floor. As i went around the cases I stopped at the selection of Ruby Jewelry. There was a beautiful red opaque ruby set in a lovely diamond setting at a high cost. I was puzzled at this so I got up my courage and asked the SA how they could charge so much for an opaque ruby. He said it depends on the color, and while it is true that transparent rubies are the most valuable, there are times when an opaque ruby is also valuable. I just tucked that bit of info away until I had the chance to buy a mildly translucent-opaque ruby myself. It is stoplight red, and looks very nice in some diamonds. I love the color, which is a color you do not see often. I also overpaid for it, but over time it bothers me less.

Beautiful color ruby it is. I think a ruby the size of the OPs might also bring a decent sum--of course I'd not venture a guess.

I think you've hit the nail on the head Roger. I was wondering why the value seemed to change so drastically depending on which Gemologist I spoke to , but it appears at this size Ruby there is not much to compare it to. Also being quite Unique it is " Worth as much as a buyer is willing to pay "

It may be red corundum, but its definitely not gem quality material. I wouldn't consider it to be valuable.

Ditto. Treatment isn't what sets the price but colour first, then clarity, size, treatment and etc. Asking a gemmologist or appraiser how much it is worth isn't useful. Ask how much they are willing to pay for it and you'll get your answer. You will find that depending on how you phrase your question, the answer you get will be vastly different.
