Calling DF--Rolex question

I tried on two Rolex yesterday (not in budget anytime soon). I have no idea how pricing works. These were 31mm Date-justs automatics and one had a black face and the other silver face. I liked the size a lot. I also liked the silver face bec it was subtle and I liked the Roman numerals.

They were each $6200. Is this pricing around normal? I have no idea how much a new Rolex costs.

Since neither is in the budget and I have yet to get myself back into wearing a watch as I hoped 6200 or whatever is not likely. DH didn't seem concerned about this being a 40th bday gift (not anytime soon) and actually if we didn't have so much going on with the house was not entirely discouraged from it, bec he thought the brand was good for value retention.

Were the new or used, stainless steel, 18K white gold, or platinum?

Ame...If you can haggle 15% off MSRP from an AD "take it!", b/c unlike other brands Rolex have a tight control on discounting their watches. In other words...if a Rolex distributor found out that certain AD are selling at a big discount they will then pull the AD's license.

The prices are insano.. Stainless steel back in the day was like $900, because I sold them from an authorized dealer.

DO not buy off the intenet... I can say DF bought a great watch from a store near me, he can share that info with you....

But you are not ready to buy so... Have fun window shopping.. :wavey:

In 1977 a gent's S/S Datejust was $425. The watch was my 18th BD present from my gf.

New and it is stainless. I can't wear gold so that isn't gonna be purchased.

They were unwilling to negotiate. And since I'm not in the market anyway I'm not too concerned. I have no idea what the hell normal pricing for these would be anyway.

$6200 is the list price for those models with that particular bracelet; think 10% is the best discount you could expect from an authorized dealer on those because they usually sell well sans any discount, so an AD doesn't need to discount them to move them out of inventory.

Thanks.
I'm clueless about today's pricing since I bought mine maybe 25 years ago.

Yup, thus the reason I told Ame if she can negotiate 15% off to "take the deal". Back in the early 90's I was able to buy Rolexes at a 32% discount from grey market dealers.

A gray market item was not intended to be sold in that country so it does not come with a warranty from Rolex.
To me this is not a 32% discount; it is a different product.

It is just a product that is worth 32% less than a Rolex with a full factory warranty.
There is no discount.
If I'm going to spend thousands of bucks on a watch I want the factory warranty and am happy to pay retail to get it, but that's just me.

I'm not criticizing your way of buying watches, just pointing out that it is not a discount since you are getting a different thing even if the watch itself is physically identical.

Re: Calling DF--Rolex question

Ame, I recently tried on the same watch with a pale pink face. The price is pretty crazy to me! I think I will go with a Cartier just because I really could care less about what is inside the watch, and the quartz ones keep better time anyway! ;))

nothing wrong with buying from an AD, but one should still try to negotiate the best price... ;))

Oh I'd be buying from an AD. I want all warranties and whatnot intact. But this is so out of budget. I also still want the Ballon Bleu but neither is a likelihood soon.

I guess I didn't make myself clear. I was seeking to suggest that she take a 10% off deal if offered by an AD, rather than set 15% as her target discount for either of these watches.

(Even 10% from an AD may prove unrealistic. The web sites of a couple of the established, grey market dealers I just checked are presently listing these particular watdhes at just 10-13% off).
