Hi all, Im new here :wavey:

I am designing a custom ring for myself, and while the budget for the whole thing is quite low, I want to make sure its as I want it.

The only direction I have on how I want the ring is I know I want a modest 100-150 usd colour change garnet as the centerstone. The weight would be around 0.6-0.9ct. I have no prefered cut or shape, to be honest. Ive been looking on multicolour.com and Ive found some really pretty ones, and I would like your opinion on them. Im not totally ignorant about gems but I find it hard to tell if a stone is too grey, too dark, if there is a strong degreee of colour change or saturation, if there is too much exinction or if large windows are present, etc. These are the ones I have my eye on:

http://www.multicolour.com/detail/?-762963195 (Does the cutting seem a bit disproportionate to you?)
http://www.multicolour.com/detail/?1406677153
http://www.multicolour.com/detail/?-506133773 <-- there seems to be a tiny little X shaped scrath on the bottom right in the picture of the red stone. And there is another strange sort of line a bit above in the blue one. (maybe Im just too fussy)
http://www.multicolour.com/detail/?1817601843 < --This one is over my budget, but still a possibility

Sooo...what do you think? If you have any other suggestions please post them (However the sites will need to ship internationally)

Since ccg is 7-7.5 on mohs scale, I was wondering, which setting would protect the stone best? A bezel setting? I worry about the stone chipping.

Thank you so much  (loving the smilies here, hehe)

All the stones you selected have fairly large windows (dead areas where light leaks through) and medium to large bow ties.

hmm.. alright, thanks for the warnings!

Ive been looking at the higher priced ones and took a liking to this one, but are those three 'strikes' in the middle considered bad windows? http://www.multicolour.com/detail/?-925811234

I will definitely consider the second last one you posted, Vapid. Dunno how I missed it. Will slight inclusions be noticeable when I see it?

Yes those three strikes form a minor window in that trillion type stone. Smaller, and of more peculiar form, the trillion prevents is from looking like a bow tie, but it looks quite a bit like a Windsor to me; too tight and equilateral to be a four in hand.

The inclusions in that last one I linked will likely be slightly noticeable at 12 inches to someone who is looking for them. They are also very typical to these stones from this location. To me they would be acceptable.

This is so interesting to me.... Ive looked around on other sites and found a colour change flourite. How do these fare differently from garnets? http://www.ajsgem.com/gemstones/color-change-fluorite/color-change-fluorite-7.3-carats.html

What about this one, second row from the bottom to the very right (1.14ct, $300).http://www.gemfix.com/garnet_malaya.html#thumb The color looks dull however it states in the description it's 'flashy', and I understand how difficult it is to capture a gemstone's color - particularly greenish ones.

Fluorite is quite fragile: 4 on Moh's scale, brittle and with perfect cleavage. I have a fluorite ring that I got before I realized just how delicate the stone is, so I rarely wear it and baby it like crazy when I do.

Even if you can find someone daring enough to set fluorite, I would not dare wear it in a ring but an occasional wear pendant. The Gemfix cc stone is described as grayish purple, meaning that the gray component is quite strong.

I know you're making a custom ring but I thought this might be interesting for anyone also interested in color change garnets.

The stone is extremely pretty, it's too bad it got chipped during the setting. I guess that's the risk of making a custom ring.

Thanks Chono and Lady Disdain, I wasn't considering the flourite in any case, I was just curious about it.

Gosh, that really is a pretty stone Peacechick. I love the pink.

I guess Ill just take my time on picking a stone... no need to rush. However Im still looking for opinions on the ccg here :http://www.gemfix.com/garnet_malaya.html#thumb second row from the bottom to the very right, 1.14ct

Will keep hunting :)

I have to say I don't fancy the green in the stone and that's the color you'll be seeing most of the time right? The purple seems fine but the description suggests its gray-purple-- so again, dull saturation?

The flashy bit refers to brilliance, not color I think. So it would be flashy but the color wouldn't be vivid. Color is a personal preference though

The windowing is fairly small and is most likely to be unnoticeable once set. The purple side is nice but the GIA colour code for the blue side is extremely gray. Those suggested by VL are cut better than your original selection but the bow-tie on a few are too much for me personally. At this price point, it will be difficult to have it all so pick and choose your poison.
