At the top end of light performance there are going to be many differing kinds of wonderful diamonds. Not all will look the same, especially when carefully analyzed. As Garry Holloway has taught us, there will be those that have high light return, those with more fire and those with greatert scintillation and contrast. No one will be able to absolutely say only one of these is the VERY best although many will market their particular stone or brand as "the top stone".

As objective observers, we won''t promote one high performer over another, but will attempt to identify what makes them different. This will help people select stones that best fit their needs.

It appears that there will be several clusters of high performing diamond types. There will be those among the expected configurations of traditional cutting and some among unanticipated configurations that have lesser or greater depth, or unusal facet arrangements and angles. (A lot like the AGS 0 princess cuts differ from regular princess cuts)

It seems to make sense that the visible, face-up plane of surface area, the area enclosed by the girdle, will be compared to the weight of the diamond by a ratio or percentage. This will allow consumers to select among diamonds with high performance that also offer a good balance of visual size for the money. Maybe a small looking stone will be the best one for them, but most people would prefer a larger look if they are not giving up performance and beauty.

We will be putting a visual surface area to weight ratio on fancy shaped diamond reports in the coming months. It may prove to add value to diamond reports. For that matter, it probably would add value to colored gem reports, too.
