How much can you negotiate on a stone or is that not right

No harm in asking.

But better if you have a true idea what price is reasonable. And if you are positive that''s the right stone and the right price.

Hi Ronda,

I would say that independent jewelry stores would be more likley to negotiate.

As well, the independent store is more likley to have higher quality diamonds and at better starting prices.

For the sake of clarity, I describe Mall stores as a chain jewelry store that is in a mall.

There are also independent jewlers in malls that the above will not apply to.

Traditionally, the markup was "keystone" (100%) to "triple key" (300%) e.g. if an item costs the jeweler $1000, they would sell it anywhere from $2000 - $3000. Of course this is negotiable (as a jeweler can charge whatever he thinks is reasonable), and has now changed due to pricing pressures from Internet Vendors, especially with loose diamonds. The margins for those are really low now.
