EGL Cert - Is This Weird??

Hi everyone,

I recently upgraded my center stone with the jeweler we've been using for the past 10 years, and I just noticed a few things that have me concerned. When I enter the cert number on EGL USA's website, it comes back with "incorrect report number entered." The date on the cert was July of 2011, so I'm not sure why it wouldn't be in their system. Has anyone else encountered this problem?

My other concern is that the stone is rated "EGL Very Good" but it was presented to me in an "Ideal Cut Portfolio." There is an EGL sticker on the back of the portfolio with my stone's stats, but isn't it kind of strange that EGL would put the cert for a Very Good cut in an Ideal folder??

Thank you in advance!

Not promising. Crown and pav are both very shallow - stone probably goes dark when you lean over it... bigger concern IMO - what type of setting do you have? Shallow c/p and thin girdle = higher chipping risk, another poster sna recently dealt with a shallow stone that chipped

ETA maybe the portfolio title is b/c they have titled the stone H&A? I see a hearts diagram? I don't know - just taking a guess.

Thanks so much for posting that link! Hmmm, very interesting - I was already a bit concerned about chipping due to a cloud inclusion near the surface, but this is definitely not great news. Here is a link to the post I just made in SMTB - I currently have a 3 stone but will be resetting in a halo.

Thanks for your input - I really appreciate it. I may see if I can talk to my jeweler about finding another stone...

I don't know much about EGL but I was under the impression that any of their stones labeled hearts and arrows also came with their ideal cut grade. I didn't enter your report number to see if it came back, but I would definitely mention this to your jeweler to see if the wrong report was put into your package.

I also agree with Yssie, that the stone about the chipping risk. :((

I just saw your SMTB thread - your ring is very pretty!

Resetting to a halo is good news - there won't be any exposed girdle. Just be sure to choose a skilled bench and have the stone insured for shipping/setting ::)

Pervasive clouds in lower-clarity stones may be visible (not eyeclean to your personal specifications) and/or may reduce brilliance, but the cloud itself is not a durability risk.

This is really helpful information. Thanks so much, Yssie! I was originally concerned about the color of my stone, but now I have to say that this potential chipping issue is really stressing me out! I mistakenly thought that an excellent rating on HCA meant that the cut was up to par. It's amazing how you can do so much research and still not get it right...I guess it's just an overwhelming process.

I wish I had known about this site when we were first looking for our engagement ring years ago. Now that my money is tied up with this jeweler, I feel like my options are going to be very limited. I'm thinking that selling my stone and purchasing another one elsewhere wouldn't be the best financial decision at this point...but I really wish I could!

That jeweler has diamond suppliers and he CAN call in other diamonds for you to look at! You are not limited to what he has in stock. Just tell him you want GIA Excellent cut only, and you'll be headed in the right direction!
