As a total novice, I''m wondering if any of you experts out there can explain how a stone on the website can have a larger carat size than another but smaller dimentions.

ie - both of these are asscher cut
EG: 5.06 carat measures 10.08x10.04x6.58
but..5.18 carat measures 9.52x9.48x6.46

How does that work ?

any thots appreciated !

The way a diamond is cut can have a major impact on the "spread" which is what you are seeing. Two typical components where weight is hidden are bottom heavy stones and stones with thick girdles.

Chances are, the stone that is smaller in spread but heavier in weight is cut deep--too much of the diamond''s weight is lost in the pavillion or underside of the stone. Or, the girdle might be thick or very thick--another cause of hidden weight that will make a stone spread less than its weight would suggest.

If you read the tutorial at the top of this site, it will give you a great understanding of these concepts.
