Unloved and Beaten Up OEC

Oh the poor thing. While going through the" non-fine" jewelry formally belonging to my late auntie, I happened across a small 1/2 carat oec in a rather junk setting.

I, at first, though it had to be fake as auntie tended to wear all her diamonds....at the same time.

No, it s real. A cute facet pattern, faces up white (I'd estimate low H/I color)......sparkles well.

HOWEVER, it looks like it's taken a couple of turns in the garbage disposal! OMG!

There is a v-shaped chip in the girdle. Not a nick size - a good size chunk. While louping under 10x, there appears to be collateral damage starting at the chip moving downward to the 7 o'clock position across the lower girdle and pavilion facets. I can't see everything as the setting is in the way.

Hmmmm.. what to do? Try to save it with a recut and polishing? Or take my chances and have it reset in a bezel pendant to protect it and hope for the best. The girdle is extremely thin. Either would probably run me the same amount of money.

I know I'd lose substantial weight with a recut - if it is even possible.

To the average Joe it's eyeclean and sparkles like only an oec can. Love those chunky petals!

What a find! If it were me I would bezel it as you have said in your post and wear it in a pendant. Can you post any pictures?

Just another plug for a pendant - my favourite is the Barbara by BGD http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/diamond-pendants/the-barbara-pendant-18k-white-gold-5352w18

Athenaworth just posted a new pendant she wears along with the Barbara. Have you seen that thread? https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/layers-of-oec-goodness.173877/

Maybe by bezelling the setting, you won't need a recut? Give Brian a call at BGD... worth a phone call!

I have an old mine cut given to me and it had a crack in it. There's no way I would ever sell or want to get rid of it b/c it has so much sentimental value. I bezeled it for a necklace I had made. It ended up chipping (a big one on the side of the table), but I still wear it and it still sparkles. Its just a "more loved" piece that I will pass down.

I agree with the others...bezel. Recutting such a possibly fragile stone makes me nervous. Heck...recutting a good stone makes me nervous. Would love to see a pic if you have one!
