Homeopathy is bogus

I thing homeopathy is a big crock of $#%t!

I was seeking help for my GERD and gastritis, as I'm not getting any relief from the remedies my doctor prescribes. I went to a naturopath that came highly recommended. After 6 months of going to her and taking numerous pills and tinctures (seriously, it was difficult keeping it all straight what I had to take and when) I stopped going. No real difference in my conditions.

I went with an open mind to the naturopath (and didn't know homeopathy was her specialty, but the fact that she was British should have tipped me off), concerning the field and homepathy. Spend a fair bit of money on what exactly? Small brown bottles of essentially water with alcohol to preserve it and a 1/cajillion parts per billion of something that has a latin name? Give me a break.

I am just so not interested in hearing anyone defend this hocus pocus, I just wanted to vent. Thank God hubbies insurance paid for part of it, but what a colossal waste of my time. Thanks for listening ;(

Didn't they used to sell snake oil in those same bottles?

!

I think you owe an apology to those here, perhaps lurkers, who feel they benefit from Homeopathy.
Perhaps some here work in that field.

entitled to her opinion.

but i have found that for MY conditions my move to natural herbal remedies [not necessarily homeopathic] and away from western pharmaceuticals to be a blessing.

i won't paint the OP with a tarbrush but i certainly don't expect to be mocked for sharing my experience either. each to their own. what works for one does not always work for another. and not all drs are created equal.......

Begonia I am sorry for your GERD and gastritis. I wish I had something productive to add that would help you in this situation. It sounds so trivial, but its a life changing problem. When I had it, I found it hard to concentrate, not to mention uncomfortable as well as painful. Sleeping was interrupted. I was constantly worried about what would happen next. Anyway, I'm not saying anything you don't know already.

But I am sorry and send you dust.

I totally understand the need to vent, Begonia. Sorry you are feeling unwell with no end in sight. Feeling terrible and not being able to fix the ill or get better can definitely stir up anger and frustration! Of course it isn't nice to generalize but when you're desperate to be well again sometimes that's just where your mind goes.

I had a bad experience a few weeks ago concerning my own health care and I was so frustrated with things that I was ready to make a pretty rash decision which I won't go into here. I guess I had the opposite experience from you--I wanted to switch to something more holistic/homeopathic!

Regardless of what has or hasn't worked for you, it's good to vent and I figure you meant no harm to anyone here who has had success with homeopathy or practices homeopathic medicine. I suppose you might want to make that disclaimer next time lest you want to keep hearing the "people vary" lecture from Kenny. ;))

Kenny: I won't apologize for my opinion. It didn't provide me with one iota of relief, and it was more than the 2 issues that were treated. It wasted my precious financial and physical resources. I am suspicious of the whole movement.

Movie Zombie: Yes, it is only opinion. Experiential opinion. I have, in fact, found a modicum of relief from other herbal remedies and away from allopathic medicine (where I have tried many different prescriptions), but not homeopathic. I will try another naturopath, but will better inform myself of their specialties/beliefs.

minousbijoux: Thank you. Chronic pain is a terrible thing, and the worry...

monarch64: Of course you are right. I should also say I use holistic medicine daily, and it does provide some short-term relief. I am completely frustrated with allopathic medicine and the side effects of drug therapy (and lack of results at times). By all means, give homeopathy a go, and if it helps your condition, then I would be so happy for you. For me it did nothing.

What does being British have to do with it when you made that comment "it should have tipped me off"?

I"m sorry you've had a bad experience and it's doubly frustrating when you don't feel good.

There was a study that a well known/used medication had the same effects as a placebo for what it was being used. I believe that's because our minds help us a lot to deal with what's going on with our bodies.

Hopefully you'll find something that works. Usually it doesn't hurt to try a new approach to a health problem if nothing else is working. Have you tried Manuka honey?

Hope you feel better.

Hard to feel rotten, Begonia. I hope something that helps comes up for you. Chronic pain & lack of sleep wears you down -- dust in clouds for you! =)

I don't get why Begonia owes an apology to anyone for expressing her opinion of the experience she had, Kenny. Should the responders who had good experiences w/homeopathy apologize to Begonia? C'mon, you can carry PCness so far that you fade into the scenery, having no opinions, learning nothing from your own experience in life, a blank blank slate forever, so as not to disagree with a single ego-challenged soul. I didn't see her write that nobody was allowed to differ from her thoughts. Blue is my favorite color; I HATE brown. Now all brown lovers must feel seriously dissed?

I have little confidence in some of the pharmaceuticals being pushed today and have seen the consequences of some of it in family members. I would be skeptical of homeopathy as well, but I am a big proponent of using natural medications anytime possible. I am not sure what that is called!

Homeopathy is NOT the same as using natrual or herbal treatments.

For a while I was seeing a doctor who was always trying to sell me something homeopathic. I finally did some research and ran across a video of James Randi (who I have a lot of respect for) discussing how homeopathic items are created. Huge eye opener for me.

EricaR thanks for posting this. I just looked up homeopathy

from Wikipedia
Homeopathy i/ˌhoʊmiˈɒpəθi/ (also spelled homoeopathy or homœopathy) is a form of alternative medicine in which practitioners claim to treat patients using highly diluted[1][2] preparations that are believed to cause healthy people to exhibit symptoms that are similar to those exhibited by the patient. The collective weight of scientific evidence has found homeopathy to be no more effective than a placebo

I feel really thick asking, but why would a healthy person want to experience the symptoms of a sick person? Or am I just not understanding it properly?

Begonia, i'm glad you'll be doing your own research re natural/herbal treatments. there is a lot of info...some better than others. you will learn to dististinquish both. also, what works for one sometimes doesn't work for another. i find that the more info i have the more i can discuss with a "western" based medical doctor. most want to push pharmaceuticals on me and then i tell them what i'm taking for that specific already. the more knowledge i have the more i can protect myself and heal as well. western medicine is great at diagnostic but only treats symptoms rather than causes. of course, that is my opinion which i know other can disagree with.

if i may suggest, please research acupuncture for your specific condition. not sure where you are but the guy i go to has great results with many conditions. he's from taiwan and at least 3rd generation in his family doing acupuncture. not all acupuncturists are created equal either. took me some time to find this one.

also, if you're interest in exploring alternative medical info, you can listen to these on line:

Your Own Health and Fitness: http://www.kpfa.org/node/48

this woman is grounded in science and research as well as experience with her clients.

the following is primarily herbal and has interesting info but i find it to be a bit more "out there" as they do programs re flower essences and other such things:

The Herbal Highway: http://www.kpfa.org/node/36

good luck. i know that navigating the medical system even with insurance is difficult, especially with an ongoing and painful condition.

The comment about being British pertains to the city I live in, which has a large percentage of British immigrants (and their descendants) per capita, in a country that was a former British colony. It has been my experience of my many British friends and acquaintances, that most have a homeopathic belief. Further, the city I live in (Victoria - named after a British Queen) supports a large climate of alterative therapies (naturopathic, Chinese medicine, homeopathic doctors, health food stores and the like). Hell, most of our relatives (including mine) are UK descendants. Was I generalizing for Victoria? No. Not in my experience (the disclaimer arrives). The likelihood of being an alternative practitioner, being British and being homeopathic in Victoria is high.

My earlier experience with homeopathy a few years ago for a colicky son, was unsuccessful. My treatment for grief with homeopathy was unsuccessful. I went to a naturopath, who claimed to use homeopathy in conjunction with other therapies (of which naturopaths have access to many). All of her treatments, except one, were homeopathic. Why did I stay? She was convincing I suppose. Told me repeatedly she could control the symptoms, and had done so with many others. A nice gal all in all. Funnily, the one treatment that wasn't homeopathic is the one that is helping somewhat. She would like me to go off it and come back for more treatment. My google search has shown that the herbal treatment I am on is as successful as an otc H2 blockers. I can also stay on it for many months.

Your well wishes and helpful tips are much appreciated! :saint:

makemepretty - No, I haven't tried manuka, but you can better believe I am gonna give it a go! :))

lknvrb4 - I have tried ACV. A few times. Not much change, or improvement I'm afraid. Thanks for the tip!

jewelfreak - Thanks for saying it for me. I'm too tired for the right words...

EricaR - I'm gonna watch that sucker!

moviezombie - I'll carefully check all of that out - thank you so much. Seriously. I have tried acupuncture, and it provides immediate relief. It doesn't last long unfortunately, but acupuncture works like a hot damn for a lot of things for me! :))

For the other posters - It is what it is. I hope I've been clear about where I was coming from. Better yet, come on over for a cuppa (it is Victoria after all) and we can sip tea and hang. I could sure use a hand to hold when the pain starts.

Maisie - that is a great question. Nobody can seem to answer it. It's based on nothing more than a theory.

I wholeheartedly share your opinions regarding homeopathy Begonia. You might enjoy the book Bad Science by Ben Goldacre if you want to find out more about the studies that have been done on this, and on the pharmaceutical industry as a whole. He is a British medical doctor specialising in public health. He can be a bit...fanatical and ranting in places, but the science and facts are sound and make for very interesting reading. A quick google will pull up many of his articles, both research and media.

ETA - this is hilarious. "Homeopathic A&E": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMGIbOGu8q0

Hi,

I went to homeopathic Drs(Md's) while living in England. I also had no good result. But, I also went for pain management, which is an exceptionally hard symptom to manage. I had to come back to the states where they did surgery to remedy the situation. Thank God. I'm not a fan of homeopathic, but am in general a big fan of alternative medicine. which homeopathic falls under.
I am a person who reacts well to western medicine, even over the counter meds work on me with smaller dosages. But pain is so difficult to manage. I really know what that is like. So sorry!

Begonia,

What is your diet like? Have you looked into food allergies/intolerances? Food allergies/sensitivities are a major culprit in many illnesses and especially with digestive disorders. The food elimination diet isn't easy - but it is very helpful in pointing out trigger foods. Try taking digestive enzymes (proven to help digestion and not expensive) and pro-biotics to build up your digestive system. I hope you feel better soon.

Nathural therapy definitely has benefits, but homeopathy is simply hocus. Most dilutions are so high they don't contain a single molecule of the active ingredient - there's no way that can work! If it works for someone, it's going to just be placebo effect, and that's great if it works for you, but chances are the water you're drinking is only going to make you less thirsty.

Begonia, i just remembered something. i read a most interesting article about a woman named Donna Smith who suffered from all kinds things. she did a lot of research to self-heal and then worked with a Lenoard Mith, MD who was/is a medical adviser for the U of Miami's departmet of integrative medicine to understand the science behind what was working for her. all came down to food combining. some combos are easy to digest, others aren't. the article was very interesting. i read it in a publication i subscribe to: BottomLine-Personal but i can't find the article on line! the woman's website seems rather commercial but the article was about her health journey and actually gave the info from her book. her website is www.BodyEcology.com

i wish i had a link to the article for you to read. it will show up eventually but because its in the latest issue, it can't be accessed now. you might keep it in mind.....

again, good luck.

ps i think her website is very commercial compared to the article. i didn't anticipate that!
