Dear font lovers,

I have bowed to the inevitable and decided to DIY our wedding invitations. My sister and I found a gorgeous white cardstock (300gsm) with a moderately thick pinstripe that I LOVE. It has a bit of texture but not too much, so I'm now on the hunt for a font that will make our sapphire blue text pop. The invite it long and narrow (3 to an A4 page).

Any suggestions? We're doing a relatively modern invite so I guess my preference is a modern font. Being an English nerd, I like serifs  but don't let that hold you back!

Hey Echidna! While I'm no font queen, can you tell us a little more about your wedding in terms of style (super chic, clean and classic, etc) and formality (casual, formal, black-tie)? It might help others (I'm admittedly horrible at selecting fonts) narrow down their choices, since the font can really help convey the tone of the wedding to guests.

Oooo, good questions vc10um :appl:

Okay, we're not sticking to a strong theme but I'd call it modern elegant. I'm wearing the La Sposa Fanal, the flowers are all tulips in sunset colours, and the dress code is lounge suit and cocktail dresses. It'll be winter here in July so we increased the formality a bit by suggesting suits (it's usually too hot). Our venue is very modern- all dark wood, crisp white linen and floor to ceiling glass looking out into the city.

Does that help? Any and all suggestions welcome!

Yeah! Yep, I totally love fonts. You'll probably want a script font and a text font. We used Sensual for our names and Mrs. Eaves for our type.

I went looking for fonts that were elegant, but not overly stuffy. Here are some script fonts I really like:

Avalon: http://new.myfonts.com/fonts/fontbureau/avalon/
Aphrodite: http://new.myfonts.com/fonts/typesenses/aphrodite-slim/
Sheila: http://new.myfonts.com/fonts/laura-worthington/sheila/
Ministry Script: http://new.myfonts.com/fonts/sudtipos/ministry-script/
Blanchard: http://new.myfonts.com/fonts/canadatype/blanchard/
Miss Le Gatees: http://new.myfonts.com/fonts/sudtipos/miss-le-gatees/
Mr Leopolde: http://new.myfonts.com/fonts/sudtipos/mr-leopolde/
Mr Blaketon: http://new.myfonts.com/fonts/sudtipos/mr-blaketon/
Classic: http://new.myfonts.com/fonts/classic/classic/
Liana: http://new.myfonts.com/fonts/paratype/liana/
Legendaria: http://new.myfonts.com/fonts/corradine/legendaria/
Ability: http://new.myfonts.com/fonts/scholtz/ability/
Zoe: http://new.myfonts.com/fonts/autographis/zoe/

Do any of those tickle your fancy? If you give me specific critiques on fonts I can try and find something that suits you better.

One thing to note it that some words look better in some fonts than other. So, a certain font may have a gorgeous S but a lousy M. Without knowing your names or what words you would want in script, it's a little challenging. One thing nice about myfonts.com, though, is that you can view each font in whatever words you want. I would recommend playing around on each of these font pages, seeing what you like in your names. Then once you've narrowed that down to one or two, you can find a lovely type font to offset them.

Thank you, ladies! I'll go through these suggestions and try from there

Sillyberry, we'll probably only have our names in a script font. They both start with a D. Mine name has more "flow" that his so it'll be interesting to play around. Hoofbeats, I love the one you chose! Very nice.

Will let you know how it goes...

Thanks for checking in, Sillyberry :))

You picked me out some fabulous fonts :appl: There's something about the Legendaria Swash 3 that I LOVE. I think it's flourishes on the Ds (pleasing but not too feminine for the FI). I've got a lower case q in my name and that looks really interesting in this font.

I also really like Zoe, Ability Black, and Aphrodite Slim Stylistic. We're going to be using quite a small point size, so Zoe might actually read best.

I have to say that I had NO idea fonts were so expensive! I realise it's basically intellectual property but wowza. Did you just pick a single version and then see if it would work with your platform?

Yeah...I didn't know fonts were so expensive either! Some fonts you can google and see if there is a free version. You're more likely to get lucky with older fonts. There wasn't a readily available free version of my script font, but Mrs Eaves can be found for free. I got a little lucky, because there was only regular or bold to choose from, and my graphic designer said we were ordering bold!

Legendaria is gorgeous. It also appears to have multiple glyphs for each character, so you can make certain letters swirlier (although to be honest I don't know how you make that happen!). And it appears to be BRAND SPANKING NEW! For some reason the Legendaria OT is showing up as having a lot of spaces between letters, but I don't actually think that is true. Here is what I see when I go to Tech Specs (I may have come up with the only word that I could think of quickly that started with D and has a q!):

Another font lover here! I spend hours aimlessly browsing urbanfonts.com! I DIY'd my sister's invites last year and used Jefferson (http://www.urbanfonts.com/fonts/Jefferson.htm) for her script.

Also loving Adine Kirnberg:[urlhttp://www.urbanfonts.com/fonts/Adine_Kirnberg.htm]
Jane Austen:http://www.urbanfonts.com/fonts/Jane_Austen.htm

and, not for invites, but for some other graphics I work with,
Bleeding Cowboys:http://www.urbanfonts.com/fonts/Bleeding_Cowboys.htm
Outlaw:[urlhttp://www.urbanfonts.com/fonts/Outlaw.htm]

Oh, oh I wish I could use the pretty fonts all the time!

A new installment of fonts!

Adios Script (very romantic, has great variants)
Rosarian (fun and a little retro for a more casual event)
