Hi, ladies,

I always enjoy our Thanksgiving recipe threads, so I thought it would be fun to start one for this year.

Here are some former threads:
2003 Pie Recipes: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/thanksgiving-pie-recipes.10543/
2005: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/thanksgiving-recipes.36142/

2009: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/thanksgiving-recipes.129019/
What Says "Thanksgiving" to You? https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/what-says-thanksgiving-to-you.129212/

We have SO MANY great Thanksgiving threads, so these links are just a sample.

Now I'd like to hear from current PSers: What is your signature Thanksgiving dish? What is on your menu? Do you have fun alternate dishes for the classics? Decorating ideas? Any family Thanksgiving traditions?

Please share all things Thanksgiving here!

I'll start!

I love Thanksgiving. LOVE IT. I haven't hosted since 2008, but I traded holidays with my mom this year and I'm super excited to host it again. (AND, she's doing Pesach now, which is such a difficult holiday. Score!)

Anyway, mashed potatoes and stuffing are my favorite.

I use a bread and celery stuffing from Allrecipes.com. It is SO easy, and so delicious:
http://allrecipes.com/recipe/bread-and-celery-stuffing/detail.aspx

I make my mashed potatoes without a recipe, but I mix:
- Yukon gold potatoes (peeled, I don't like the skin in my mash)
- Sour cream
- Milk (whatever I have, usually 1% or skim)
- Butter (no idea how much, I start with just a bit and add until they're just right.)
Mmmmmmm. Mashed potatoes.
I like my potatoes a bit heavier, not fluffy, so I don't use a ricer, just a hand masher.

As for traditions, we really don't have any but I'd like to start one. My sister made me run a 5K with her the morning of Thanksgiving last year, but we're not doing that again. :cheeky: I'd love to hear about your family traditions, maybe I'll steal one.

We're going to have a small crowd this year, only 15 adults and 9 kids.

Haven, my mother always made stuffing just like that, without a recipe. It's still my fave, after having tried all kinds of other fancy ones. Just goes best!

The BEST turkey I ever made was the year I basted it with bourbon, plain old unadulterated Jim Beam. Sounds awful, but it turned out heavenly! This year I'm doing a goose.

DH doesn't like pumpkin pie. I usually substitute tiramisu, but occasionally some other yummy pie.

After dinner (er, a fair bit after dinner, after we've recovered) we always grab a dog or 2 or 3 & take a long walk somewhere pretty. In Calif. we'd find a beach or a state park; in Conn. some place out in the countryside, same here in NC. Makes a nice end to the day.

Haven -- my mom's stuffing is the best I've ever had and it's pretty much the same recipe as the one you linked. The only difference is she also adds thyme and sage. She uses Wonder bread, and I've often wondered if it would be just as good with whole wheat bread (which I prefer normally).

We also use Yukon gold potatoes for our mashed potatoes. I add skim milk, butter, and parmesan cheese to mine (oh, and I don't bother peeling the potatoes first). My husband and I love smashed potatoes, so ours aren't perfectly smooth like the ones my mom makes.

The only tradition we have is that we usually go to the movies on Thanksgiving night. If there's nothing out that we want to see, we skip it, but we can usually find something in the theaters. Also, if we have Thanksgiving with my parents, we go to my in-laws' house the day after for his mom's homemade turkey soup. My husband loves it. I used to watch the Macy's parade and then the dog show, but my husband doesn't like to do this, so I've skipped it over the last few years.

I'll be following this thread, and reading the past threads as well as other recipe threads. My Thanksgiving will have to be altered a bit. I can't have the marshmallows on sweet potatoes. I can't have macaroni and cheese like my family. No stuffing since I can't have white flour. No mashed potatoes. No gravy. No pumpkin pie. I'm looking forward to turkey, and my aunt makes the best home made cranberry sauce using orange zest.
