Sorry to bother you, I''m a newbie and just wanted to know if my sisiter-in-law is nuts. She contends that "the" princess cut is a recent innovation, not seen prior to 1984. Is that true?

I certainly apologize in advance should this also turn out to be the "wrong" forum for this question. And if replying to tell me this isn''t the right forum, would you be so kind as to list what you believe to be a more appropriate one.

Out of curiosity, I Googled and found this
http://www.24carat.co.uk/princesscutdiamonds.html

Summary: the Princess cut is effectively a square version of the round brilliand cut. It has evolved from the Barion cut developed over 30 yrs ago. It has not taken off in popularity until recently as patents on the Barion cut expired.
