Hi, I'm in love with colored gems. I have been trying to make myself a list of all the vendors folks here use, but I'm getting confused. :!:

I've been looking for an aqua and a nice pink spinel or a rhodolite garnet, or rubellite tourmaline, malaya garnet (?). Trying to teach myself which stones are which, where they come from and what they look like. Is there a list of these vendors (Gene, Dan, etc). I don't know their websites, and I"m having difficulty navigating all this information. Anybody got a nice list out there? :wink2: Can someone help?

thanks!

Hi! I posted this info recently in another thread (about Barry's drops) so just copied and pasted it here... Happy Hunting!

"To get some notice of upcoming drops, you can sign up for newsletters at:

1. Barry's site (www.acstones.com)
2. Gary Braun's site (www.finewatergems.com)
3. Brad's site (www.thegemtrader.com)
4. Rick's site (www.artcutgems.com)
5. Dana's site (www.mastercutgems.com)
6. Andrew's site (www.gemfix.com)

For Gene's site (www.precisongem.com), he has an RSS feed you can subscribe to that lets you know when there are changes to his site but even after reading some detailed instructions on how to do so, I still haven't figured it out -- I just check pretty often.

I think Barry has a drop pretty regularly every Wednesday night at 6pm his time (Arizona)
Sometime the first week of each month I think The Gem Trader (Brad) and Gemfix (Andrew) usually have drops.
For the other listed sites, it varies.

There are other CS sites too, and I'm sure I'm forgetting some great ones, but these are the ones I try hardest to stay on top of..."

How exciting to begin your gemstone search and collection. The lists already provided are a great place to start. We seem to like the same gemstones too. :wavey:

Hi there:

I also remember thinking that that the information on Colored Stones under the Knowledge tab, above, would be really helpful to someone just starting out. You may want to take a look.

Of course, another way to do it is to see stones firsthand at gem shows. The problem is that (if you're like me) it can be awkward "just to look" since so many of them are pushing hard for sales. But it really helps to see stones first hand in order to figure out what you like.

thanks for all the postings, I'm going to check some out! My jeweller here is a diamond specialist, not really into the colored gems, so I have a hard time getting the stones I really want....

You are definitely in the right place to ask all the questions and to get advice and even help finding specific stones. I've come to find that most local jewelers are very limited on knowledge of colored stones, or what they "know" they don't really know. This forum will be your best friend as far as honesty, opinions and steering you in the right direction.

Good luck and let us know what you find or might need help with :)
