Vietnamese spinel

Remember when I said I was waiting on one? I've had it for a while actually because I wanted to have it checked out. The results are very good!

Its not top color but then again, I couldn't afford that anyway. It IS however got a good cut on the stone, and the color is really nice. In incandescent lighting its more orangy-red, but its not dark at all. The sparkle is amazing.

In low lights it glows quite a bit. I'm considering going with something in yellow gold for it, though the setting I have on hand is white gold. Yes sorry, its got a halo but its a very dainty ring with a very dainty halo.

Pics below are in natural overcast lighting.

I don't have any fluoro pics (yet),but, I will say its not as bright as any of my mehenges. I've yet to see this stone in the sun, so I have no idea what it will do (probably sit there and look pretty  )

Seller accepted a best offer from me which I think was a good for what it is.

I have some seller photos, I just have to find them (my computer folders are kind of a mess..ugh!!)

It's great Arc! Love the color, even if it's not "top" :D

All you need is a yellow and you'd have one heck of a stop light!

I love how subtle the orange is in your spinel and just adds some "pop" to the red. Beautiful!

Arcadian-

On my monitor, that red does not look at all orange; it looks just beautiful. I am also looking for a red spinel. I hope you wear yours in good health!

oh wow thanks! I'm forever in learning mode. I purchased this stone as a kind of learning stone as I've been researching vietnam quite a bit.

Thanks Deb. I knew you were looking for one, though I've yet to see one in an oval that I know you would love. gemcal has some that I've looked at before and only one thats a roval that has the color but may not be up your alley as far as being eye clean.

On my stone the orange is really subtle, though more noticeable under incandescent light. It also dosen't tend to shift much, but I think if you're critical about color it may be something that can bug some. (top reds don't shift at all, at least thats what I've read). I even checked the stone against some pantone swatches I have (shhh..lol I know for shame  )

Any of the top reds can be a pretty penny, though I think the vietmanese ones are cheaper than the burmese ones....and I say that in a very thankful manner!

Thanks gempassion. I really cant wait to see what she will look like in full sun :sun: . I may take her to the jeweler next weekend.

"Top color" is what YOU like, Arcadian! I can say I sure like that -- it's what I call a sort of bitter pink or red & one of my favorites. YG would look just great with it. Waiting for outdoor pics!

thanks herekittykitty, jewelfreak, and aoife yes its gorgeous. I did get to see some sun today (finally) and yeah, I see the orange a lot more now. Also In the sun I can see how much lighter the saturation is. Thats ok too. All of that comes into play with its price.

There's a quite a few purists here when it comes to red and blues especially (will include yellows and greens in that also) but those two can be some of the most hotly contested colors in the gem world as to what designates the top color of either of these. So to kill any debate, I of course said it because its totally true; its not top but hell thats cool because well..you know... 8)

Personally I'm happy with the color and its MY top color as its what I could afford to get. And lets be real; a real top spinel would kill my gem budget for like...ever  As much as I like peanut butter, I can't be eating that stuff exclusively for years on end. (besides, I have to budget a bit for my anniversary ring!!)

It is a very nice color and it will look very nice as a finished piece. I think you got a very nice stone (and if it was a good deal, so much the better!). I am not a spinel specialist, but it just looks nice. I am happy for you.

Looks red to me and the added bonus is how red it looks in daylight! W  W

I love the cut and colour and absolutely everything. I can't believe you bought this as a learning stone! It's very nice indeed.

Thanks crasru and LD. I know, I go all out for learning stones huh? It was a good stone to really test my knowledge and everything I know. Not that I claim to know much anyway right? ;)) :saint: but I think I did pretty good as its my first time for something so red. Reds are much harder to figure because everyone has a different perception on what it may mean not only to them personally but even in the color spectrum. Its the same with blues, but I figured that one out much easier than reds..no idea why.

I will say it won't be my last red spinel thats for sure :lickout:

After finally seeing the stone in sunlight and how much more orange comes out, I can say definitively that I need to go with at least a yellow gold head.

I like a bit of orange in a red stone, your spinel is lovely, love the photo where the stones rest on the black background.

Hey Arc,
You like it and you didn’t pay a ton for it and that’s all that matters. Yellow gold sounds like a great idea for your new spinel.
