When comparing to gold charts (like kitco), what percentage of 24K gold price should I pay for 18K machine made gold chain?
I plan to buy something in Antwerp.
Thank you!

I'm sorry, Stephan, but I don't buy jewelry that way! If I am looking for a piece, I comparison shop. I don't scientifically find a price for gold. In Italy gold jewelry (inevitably 18K) is often sold by the weight. (I am obviously not talking about the big jewelry houses like Buccellati!) I used to go into a jewelry shop in an alley with my husband and father-in-law where there would be bargaining in Italian, followed by weighing of a piece I was going to buy, followed by payment. So I know in Europe gold-buying is done your way, but I, personally, cannot help you! I just wanted you to know that I was reading and interested. Good luck in Antwerp!

Hi Deb, and thank you for your answer.
I plan to buy this way because I just need a very common chain, no custom piece of art.

I was thinking of something about 40 EUR/gram for a finished machine made 18K gold chain. (24K is at 1366.2 USD/oz right now)
Am I too greedy?

18k gold contains 75% of pure gold,so based on today's closing price of $1366 X 75% = $1024 per oz + labor for the chain.

Hi DancingFire, thank you, I know that.

So what should I pay for the labor of a machine made chain?

18K is approximately 25 EUR / gram, that's why my 40 EUR estimation for 18K gold + labor.

Am I correct?

I found an Ebay vendor, Gold 50, that sells new pieces about 35 EUR / gram, +/- 40 EUR VAT included.
I guess I'll try to bargain at 35/40 EUR.
I'll let you know next week.

Finally, I didn't go to Antwerp (I don't like the bad weather) but had a local diamond setter here in Brussels, a Chinese 'friend' of mine, buy a gold chain for me.
Yesterday, he found exactly what I described. I paid 43 EUR/gram everything included. It's not cheap, but he has a buy back policy (-10%) and he can clean/maintain my jewelry regularly.
It's the same guy who set my BlueNile diamond this week.
I still have to post some pictures.
I promise I will!

Thanks for the update, Stephan! When I saw that you had posted, I thought that the trip had gone very quickly. It was kind of you to keep us in the loop. I'd love to see the pictures when they are available!

Hugs,
Deb
