Depends on what she would like. Sorry to be so vague, but it really is a personal thing.

I would be thrilled with either a ring or a diamond and the go ahead to create and have made a setting.
Others are traditional and really want a ring. Some would be happy with a temporary setting for the diamond and then creating a permanent one. Some would see the whole ring as their e-ring and never want to change it.
Others would be absolutely thrilled at the chance to design a ring that they will wear for the rest of their lives.

There are several threads in this section with more info.

You know her best. What would she like?

Proposing with a daimond
Pros:
She get''s the setting she loves
No risk of her not liking the ring
she get''s to be involved in the process
she is still ''presented'' with somthing at the proposal

Cons:
She can''t show of her ring right away when she shares the good news
It may not be quite what she imagined.

It depends what you think is more important to her

YES!!!

If it fits in your budget, I would put it in an inexpensive solitaire setting so she can still show it off and have something to wear once you are engaged and then design the setting of her dreams

You can re-sell the setting later, or find a gem stone to fill it

Sounds like a great idea to me. I do like the idea of an inexpensive solitaire setting so she can wear it right away, but other than that, sounds like a winner of a plan to me!

Sounds like a great idea, if you know exactly what diamond shape/size she will like (or if she's not a fussy diamond obsessive). Otherwise, there really isn't anything wrong with proposing without anything at all and picking out the whole ring together, as she won't be able to wear/show off an unmounted diamond anyway (unless you get a cheap temp setting, which is also a good idea).

Most jewelers will give you 100% back if returned in a certain number of days. So I proposed with a solitaire setting sized so I knew it would get on her finger for sure. Then once I dropped the bomb we shopped together for the setting and had her properly sized...now to just get her to give up the ring for setting...
