I am using a family stone as one half of a pair of studs for myself. I''ve posted about this before (well over a year ago) and I''m revisiting the topic because I''ve narrowed down the selection of stones to a handful. I''m going to buy one and then have them set my a jeweler from Etsy who has done work for me before (and has shown great examples of fine jewelry on top of their more casual silver work).

I am basically going for matching diameter to my existing stone- 4.7mm and nothing too white as my stone is in the G-I color family. I don''t mind something slightly more warm if the cut is great.

Option 1
$456
0.39 carat J VS1 GIA Ideal
4.75 x 4.71 x 2.91

Depth 61.5
Table 55
Crown Angle 34
Pav Angle 40.8
HCA 1

Option
$456
0.38 carat K VS1 AGS000
4.65 x 4.68 x 2.88

Depth 61.8
Table 55.5
Crown Angle 34
Pav Angle 40.9
HCA 1.2

Option 3
$451
0.40 carat G SI2 GIA Very Good (would need to see some pictures and learn more about clarity)
Depth 61.2
Table 57
Crown Angle 35
Pav Angle 61.2

HCA 1.6

I know the best thing to do would be to give it a jeweler and have them match it. Here are my issues with that- the vendors I am considering for the stone are very large vendors and I just don''t feel excited about sending off my irreplaceable stone to possibly get lost either at the vendor or in the mail (Freke''s Big Blue experience really soured my view of mail security). The jewelers in my area that I would want to do the work just can''t compete with the pricing I can get from this Etsy vendor (on mounting) or the online vendors (for the stone). So I''m left with the knowledge I''ve acquired from reading this section of the forum.

I don''t have ASET, IdealScope or anything for these stones yet. I wanted to hear what you have to say about the numbers first. Thanks!

option 3 typo for the pavilion angle?

#1 and #2 look promising from the numbers.

Ditto SC.

You might want to get a bit narrower on your stone colour selections though? If your current stone is a G you really won't be able to help seeing the difference between that and a K, perhaps even a K in the other ear, even in ideally cut stones in those sizes.

ETA: A local appraisal of your current stone would make it easier to find a good match. I share your wariness of shipping heirlooms.

ya, color probably H/I would be safer.

Do you have any idea what is the table size for the present stone?

GAH! I was hoping to avoid that.

The angle is 40.8.

Unfortunately I have no idea on dimensions of the current stone except for the diameter and the depth (and only approximately).

I agree on the color thing. I suppose I wouldn''t be able to make a call on that unless I saw the stone in person and compared it next to my stone, face up and unmounted. I am trying to keep the cost of the stone under $475 if possible, hence my lower colors.

All look promising from the numbers then.

You could go H/I SI1? That should still be in budget.

Thanks for the comments on the numbers. I''ve sifted through a good amount of stones. I''ll go expand my search criteria and see if I can find something in the H/I range. One of those stones is a BGS (you can probably guess which one) and I would just LOVE to see his work in person. My day will come though if I don''t go with his stone.

I''ll come back with some more options later. Thanks SC and yssie!

Ya, can guess. Good luck. Or you can give us you budget and dimensions to look for?

A couple more options:

Option 4
$470
0.38 carat F SI1
4.77 x 4.81 x 2.85

Depth 59.5
Table 55
Crown Angle 33
Pav Angle 40.6

Scores 0.6 on HCA (excellent Across the Board)

Option 5
$467
0.38 carat G SI1
4.68 x 4.64 x 2.88

Depth 61.8
Table 57
Crown Angle 34.8
Pav Angle 41

Scores 2.2 on HCA (VG across the board)

I am LOVING Option 4 right now because of the HCA score. Its the biggest apread I''ve come across and I am worried that the size difference will be noticeable. I''ll bring my stone into work tomorrow (work in a lab) and see if I can get a second decimal place on that diameter to find if its closer to 4.70 or 4.79 mm across.

I can't get IS or ASET images for Options 1,2, 4 or 5.

Also learned I need to gain further understanding on the HCA score thing and figure out why Option 4 gets such a low number with such funky angles.

Just saw this post.

$475 or under.
Around 4.7 mm stone (seems to be 0.38-0.41 carats). I''m guessing that 4.65-4.75 would be sufficient for matching unless I measure my stone to be close to 4.79 mm.
Round Brilliant

#4 looks good.

You think so, even with those proportions? Should I be worried about obstruction?

And I'm assuming you would take it over the K VS1 AGS000 stone?

You, or anyone else, will not be looking at a earring stone close enough to worry about obstruction with that proportion.

You have a good point SC. Thanks so much for the reassurance. I think I''ll order the stone tomorrow once I figure verify that my stone really is 4.7 mm (it was measured by someone else a while ago for insurance purposes) and not 4.68 rounded up.

Thanks for the help!
