Maybe you gals can give me some advice. I was planning on proposing in Atlantic City, NJ by hiring a plane flying a “Will you marry me?” banner across the beach. This was going to happen in late October or early November. Atlantic City is not special to us or anything like that. It’s just the least suspicious place for me to get her on a beach (at that time of year) since all the casinos are right on the boardwalk.

We are going on a cruise to Bermuda in a few weeks. I was thinking maybe a Bermuda beach would be a little nicer than a New Jersey beach!

I considered doing it in Bermuda before, but I just let it go. I don’t know why. I guess I felt like she would almost “expect” me to do it on our next vacation. It seems like a lot of people get engaged on vacation, particularly on cruise ships.

A friend just mentioned the Bermuda idea today, and now that I think about it again, it might not be a bad idea. I wouldn’t do it on the ship though. I think somewhere on the island would be more romantic. I tried looking for some sky banner companies down there, but I haven’t had any luck yet, and I don’t have much hope.

I guess I can take her for a walk on the beach at sunset. There are supposedly some really beautiful caves down there as well. And of course there’s the ocean. Maybe we can go on a boat ride or something?

How would you feel getting engaged away from your family and friends and not being able to see them for at least 3-4 days? Bad idea?

I'm also worried about taking the ring through security at the cruise ship terminal! I hope it doesnt set the metal detector off!

Thanks.

Personally, I''m not a fan of the banner proposal. We saw one when we were down in San Diego and it caught all our attention and though, "oh, cute," but really it was just kind of non-personal, like an ad flying up in the sky. A proposal on the beach of Bermuda, on the otherhand, sounds fabulous. I say go for it.

The ring shouldn''t set of the metal detector. It''s never gone off when I''ve walked through, nor has it for any of the many ladies I''ve seen walking through the detector thingy.

I second the Bermuda proposal. Yes she will be away from family for a few days, but that''s not a bad thing...lots of romantic alone time for you two. Sure she might somewhat expect it, but you don''t want her walking around disappointed the whole cruise because she thinks your gonna pop the question and you don''t. I think if you put the ring in your carry on and not in your pocket, you should be fine. Good luck!

Here's a thought: why don't you propose just before you leave for Bermuda. Like the night before. She certainly won't be expecting it then! You'll have the element of total surprise and then you'll spend the whole holiday all dreamy eyed with each other. Like a celebration of the proposal!

Then you could do something cute like say 'Oh, honey, I think you forgot to pack the stuff in this bag!' and in teh bag are bridal mags for her to read on the plane, etc.

But, I second the others who say that if you don't propose while you're in Bermuda (or BEFORE!) and you think she'll be expecting it then you're going to have a miserable holiday with a miserable girlfriend. Trust us.

Remember: the most important thing is not that she be surprised, it's that she be happy! So, surprise her beforehand, make it full of sweet touches, then whisk her away to Bermuda and she'll be thrilled!

Indy Girl has some great points...love the magazine touch!

I do like the Bermuda, beach, sunset, thing. And I guess after hearing MC''s opinion, she does make a valid "banner" point.

Let me tell you of my dream proposal, and see if you can use any of it...(After all...you are proposing WITH MY RING-the least you can do is give me the proposal of my dreams...vicariously.

Ok, here is the scene...you take a walk along the beach...after dinner it is sunset and you come around a cove and set up for you is a table draped in flowy fabric (maybe even a flowy fabric draped canopy and a chaise lounge instead of a table) and candles are flickering and chocolate dipped strawbabies, pineapple, mango and CHEESECAKE and maybe even a bonfire. Yeah...that is in my dream too. (I say dessert because it would just make it far simpler/cheaper to orchestrate than a full course meal.) There will probably be an attendant from your hotel close by to make sure you and no one else approached. He will leave and there you two can spend the most romantic part of the day on a secluded beach...where you can just do a normal run of the mill everyday...every girls dream...down on one knee...proposal.

You can say the words...honest you can. No banner no writing in the sand...(but that is also a thought
2.gif
shells on the beach forming the words...eh?) ...you can just from your heart say those simple words...Will you marry me? You can present the ring then... or you can hide the shell box as mentioned in the other thread and have her find it as she opens it you are ON YOUR KNEE****I can''t express the importance of this (the knee part). Really, forget all the hoopla and preparation and fringe stuff...that ring and your sincerity is all she is going to need.

I suppose I am guilty of the DREAM proposal, but honest Mystery Man (or what ever alias you are using this week...) a girls dream proposal is just that. A proposal from the Man of her dreams. Really.

DKS

Oh make sure to have calling cards or long distance phone service available for her to call family and friends...the distance is no big thing. With a diamond that big...with a ring like that...her words will describe it perfectly!! You could have a photographer available on your return from the beach. I wouldn''t like it while down there. But that is me!!

Two quick points:

Even if you don't propose in Bermuda, I personally wouldn't do it in Atlantic City. Maybe it's just me, but I think AC is a REALLY sad place. The town itself is sad because it has faded so much from it's former glory, the people there are sad because they are blowing their life savings at the slot machines, the boardwalk is sad because other than casinos it only has shady "massage" parlors and the like. Of course, that's just my opinion of the place, but I just don't think AC screams "romantic".

As for your girlfriend not being able to contact friends and family for 3-4 days if you propose in Bermuda, I'm not sure that is the case. The last cruise ship I was on had internet access so you could email home (maybe even upload photos of the ring from your digital camera??) Also, I'm pretty sure there is phone service on the ship (for dollars a minute, mind you, but a short call about such a big event is worth it). Or, you could get an international calling card and call from a phone on the island. Basically, there are ways to contact home even when on a cruise, so don't let that be a deterrent.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do!!

I love the idea of proposing the night before you leave--just make sure you get packed early so you aren''t stressed about getting that done and can spend your time sipping champagne and gazing ino each others eyes!

Agreed.

And I LOVE the idea of a sunset proposal in Bermuda on the beach. How utterly romantic....

But, I'm tellin ya, you could give her that incredible ring on the roof of a beach bungalo and it's not going to matter.

Well, she had some issues with work (just started new position) and we had to reschedule the trip. We're booking another cruise in January to the Caribbean, just us two. We were going to Bermuda with another couple (I don't think I mentioned it earlier). Maybe it's better this way, with just us together.
I'm not sure if I want to wait until January though.

Oh, I wouldn't want to wait that long either!

Is there any place that is special to you both? It doesn't necessarily have to be a romantic spot, just a meaningful one, you proposing there would make it romantic.

And then you could do it whenever you wanted....

It was until I read Havernell''s post, and realized thats all true. LoL.

I guess I COULD wait until January, theres no rush, and its really not that far. September is already almost over (I can''t believe it).

I know you gals want some handshots. What if I put the ring on my pinky and take a few?

Well, take your time (seems you have quite a bit now) and it may just come to you when and where to do it.

Alright guys, the trip is booked and paid!!!!! 2 months and counting!!!!!! Hand pics are coming soon DKS!

I'm thinking a dinner proposal the first night on the ship maybe? We dont make port for 2 days, and I don't think I can wait that long. I think I'll be nervous the whole time if I do, and don't want her to suspect anything. Plus I'm not too familiar with any of these ports, and don't want to get down on one knee at the wrong place.

It would be nice to propose somewhere with a beautiful view of the ocean though.

And I still need a box. I think I'm just gonna go with a sterling silver one with an engraving inside. Pic below.
