Last night we went to the wedding for a friend''s son. The friend is a local jeweler. We ended up sitting with him and his wife, and a local developer and his wife, at the reception. The developer''s wife was across the table from me, and I noticed right away the HUGE ring she had on. Hubby, knowing my penchant for jewelry commented on it and told her we''d love to see it up close. She came over and showed me. Oh my gosh! I have never seen such a gigantic stone on a real person (not in a museum or something). It was set in a split shank pave band, with a thin pave band on each side of it. I was in awe, and regretting I didn''t have a camera with me! I asked her how big the center stone was, and she said she didn''t even know, but our friend, the jeweler had made it for her. I shot him a quick look and asked him- 12 carats!

She said it was only the third time she had worn the ring because it was so ostentatious. Yeah, it was! But heck, that thing was incredible! Of course, I think I''d be afraid to wear something worth that much without an armed guard.

Anyone know the range that thing would be worth??? I was guessing $250K+?

Man I can only imagine how that looked. Is she a tall person, or petite? I think I would have fainted. Did it look good or just too big? Tell us more!!

She was only probably 5''4" or so, and pretty petite. The thing looked HUGE on her, but it did not look gaudy or fake. I could not see any flaws in it either, and I was holding her hand in mine. I thought it looked really good on her, but I can see why she doesn''t wear it often.

When you consider that most celebrities seem to have stones in the 3-10 ct. range, I thought was was pretty shocking to see a 12 ct. on a "normal" person.

I just thought of something....maybe I should call our friend (that jeweler that made the ring) and see if he took any pictures of it. He''s not that electronically inclined, but you never know.

Wow, I''m glad it didn''t look fake. I tried a 34ct ring (22ct pear center and 2 6ct sides) on yesterday just for fun and it looked like one of those candy rings you can lick

See, I was so giddy, I neglected to mention the most obvious part! It was round.

I just looked up on a chart. For a 12 ct. round, it would be about 15mm across!

Damn, no wonder my "little" 2.28ct felt so inadequate at just 8.69mm!

OMG...I would have held her hand in mine and stared at it all night...while hiding my puny little 2.11 round behind my back, of course!

Holy cow...I can''t believe she doesn''t have a bodyguard following her around when she wears that thing!

Get pix, get pix! (Said while bouncing up and down!)

hmm well the 7c rock at WF was 250k when it was up for sale so a 12c more like 350-500k depending on color/clarity maybe. also the larger the rough the more rare it''s going to be, so it might even be way more than that considering there are probably not that many!

Wow, I can''t imagine a 15mm round diamond. What is that about the size of a nickel? I hope you get pictures.

MA...you held your own girlfriend! With your loot you aren''t far behind.

Ok, maybe hers is one REEELLY big chunk...(this is a good example of what not to wear in court!!

I can''t imagine the experience. I mean seeing one and trying one on in a store is one thing. But this woman was walking around among us...like a mortal...I mean geeze. I notice that Bill Pearlman can help you up to 13 carats...I have often wondered where I need to go for my 14 carat we are shopping for....just kidding.

If I were you, I wouldn''t have slept last night...the awe factor would have kept me up. Thanks for sharing...and reminding me there really are door knobs to be had.

That''s really quite amazing. I wonder what she wears when she''s not wearing the 12ct? I''d love to see her everyday ring!

Ditto! I tried on a 11.3ct (?) round diamond at a recent gtg and couldn't believe how massive it was! I looked fake on me! I can't imagine seeing someone walking around with a 12ct on!

I can''t even imagine what that stone looked like. I have seen a 2.5 princess on one of my clients and a 3.0 round on a lady who went to beauty school with me. My hubby said anything bigger than 2.5 is too big for me. And here I thought 1.25 max on my small hands. LOL

MaryAlaina-- I know the feeling! The grandmother of my best friend in college wore an 11 carat marquis cut; it dazzled the first time you saw it, from that point onward you knew and remembered that it was large, but somehow it always managed to look BIGGER than you remembered. I mean, we all know marquis cut look large for their weight, but it must have been about 30mm (??) -- that bad boy went past her first knuckle. She and her husband of 50+ years were the cutest couple, and he loved to tell the story of how he was so poor as a young man, he proposed with a chip that couldn''t have been more than 2/100th of a carat, but said that if she would marry him, he would one day buy her the biggest diamond she had ever seen. They''d then look at each other and smile, and she''d reach over and pat his hand, both glowing at the memory. Anyhow, she wore it to Sunday brunch, to the facialist,... to Costco to buy a TV for her granddaughter...

You know, it''s so hard to even try and guess, you know? I recently tried on a stunning EC at Harry Winston that was a little over 5 carats, F, VVS2, and I think it was $306K. (Okay, certain allowances have to be made in that calculation.) In comparison, a quick "Pricescope Your Diamond" search above for RBs over 10 carats shows quite a range: an 11 carat K SIs is available for about 140K, and an 11 carat D VVS1 is available for about 730K. Bearing in mind the non-retail advantage of internet pricing and that it sounds like it was a great quality stone, I''d guess somewhere in the $400-600K... of course, I''m probably wrong, but it''s a fun game to play!

WOW! A person could buy a nice house in my neck of the woods for that kind of money. That being said, I''d love to see a diamond that big up close and personal. I''m not sure if I''d ever want to wear one (okay, so it''s not even remotely likely I ever will, but...) it would be fun to see in any case.
