Was hoping to get some ideas and suggestions on drop earrings. I remember there was a discussion a while ago about putting a finding that would slip onto hoops. I can't seem to find it. Any points on hoop size vs pearl size and size of opening on the finding vs the pearl diameter would be most helpful.

I'm still thinking about how to reset the 11mm tahitian studs I got from POJ to match my strand. My fallback setting is this one http://www.pearlsofjoy.com/Dangle-Tahitian-Pearl-Earrings-All-Sizes_p_213.html but I'd like to explore other options. TIA :wavey:

PP and WF stock hoops/huggies to take interchangeable drops:

http://www.whiteflash.com/diamond-earrings/huggable-diamond-earrings-430.htm

As for findings, these may be suitable, one needs to check if the hole is big enough to slip through the huggie, however, these should provide some ideas what to look for:

https://www.bellafindings.com/3864/c-14k-screweye.html
https://www.bellafindings.com/3844/14ky-4mm-pearl-drop.html

As for hoop/huggie size, I believe that is down to personal taste.

I would not get the two posted above for the following reasons:
- they are too thin and delicate for my fat earlobes and chunky features
- they hang too low below my earlobes for my liking

I would be looking to buy something like these for myself if I were to get a pair of huggies to take interchangeable drops:
http://www.itshot.com/14k-gold-round-diamond-huggie-earrings-044ct-p-6032.aspx
http://www.itshot.com/diamond-hoop-earrings-14k-diamond-huggie-earrings-47ct-p-6265.aspx
http://www.itshot.com/14k-round-diamond-huggie-earrings-066ct-p-22349.aspx

The huggies that I like to wear is a plain one about 12mm in diameter and 5mm wide. I tried to make drops to go with them by wire-wrapping loose pearls, and found the loop on the earrings too large to look good. Hence I know I need the earrings to be less wide, but not too narrow to look insignificant on me.

Hope this helps.

DK :))

I can't help you with size details, but I have saved a bunch of inspiration photos of pearl drops on hoops.

and more:

These have the pearls affixed to the hoops, but they could inspire a hoop and drop combo:

Thank you for links and inspiration photos, DK and Kay. Very helpful. :)) I feel most drawn to this photo with plain gold hoops but I'd probably go with a white metal. Not sure I want diamonds for these particular earrings as I'd like for pearls to have all of the attention.

So I went thru my earrings to get a feel for sizes. Here is a shot with 5mm hoops and 1.5mm ring. I couldn't figure out how to rig them to stay together so just held them near for photos. It seems that 2-3mm might be the right width for my ears. Thoughts?

I think you are right about the 2-3 mm width range.

I too believe something in between the two will suit better.

The pearls I used to make the drops are fully drilled, and I used a head pin in order to form a loop at one end to thread through the huggies.

As I mentioned before, the loop required for a 5mm wide huggie was too large for my liking. Hence I decided to go for a narrower width instead.

I am away on a camping trip at the mo, and shall take some pics of my previous efforts when I am back at base next week.

DK :))

P.S. Judging by the photos, I personally do not believe the post on the existing pearl stud is long enough to form a big enough loop required for the drop. Therefore, new findings will be required.

I have a pair of huggies that I use for many different drops. I took these photos last summer to explain to POJ what size eyepins I needed for their round cherry Tahitians. I already owned the aubergine Tahitian pendant from Kamoka. I asked for eyepins with an interior diameter of 4 mm, and with the help of these photos, I received a perfect pair. These are 9 mm pearls, because I find larger pearls to be too heavy for my taste.

The first photo also shows a Sea of Cortez pearl with a headpin used to make drop earrings. Wire wrapping is not my strong suit, but at least I can wear the Sea of Cortez pearls for now.

Thanks dk. I agree that the stud is long enough to make a loop wide enough.

FlyGirl, thanks for the info and pictures. What's the mm width of your hoops? It looks like the 4mm loop has plenty of space to slide. Do you wear it on other hoops?

I have just a diamond hoop that I have added pearls to. Any hoop you already have would work as long as you get the eye pins to fit on them. The eye pins on mine are the large size from pp and the pearls are big drops.

baby monster - As you can see in this photo, the hoop is 3 mm or perhaps a hair less than that. I'm holding the hoop there, next to a metric ruler.

I don't wear my pearls on any other hoops.

Thanks Fly Girl for the photo. I guess I didn't notice the measurements the first time. I think I may want to have the pin measure 3mm inside as I'm thinking of using narrower hoops than yours.

4RG, thanks for the info. Your tahitians look spectacular as always.
