Hello,

I am looking to get my wife some pearl earrings for Christmas. Just as I did with her engagement ring, I thought pricescope advice would be a great place to start. At first, I was set on Akoya pearls but after reading on here that they don't always stand up to heavy wear and that sometime the nacre will peel, I have decided to look towards the freshwater pearls (these are also more budget friendly). I am looking for something in the 8-10 mm range with white gold posts. These are the two that I have narrowed it down to thus far, but I am open to other suggestions.

Your opinions and expertise are much appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi! I've just completed a major shopping spree at Pearl Paradise. They're still having their Cyber Week sale over there, and I definitely recommend them. They're super friendly and can help you select a great pair of pearls. I have the 9.0-10.mm Freshadamas too (actually mine are 9.5-10mm) and I love them! Here is a picture for you so you can see how they look on the ears. What overtone are you looking to get? Mine are silver-rose, though you can't really tell with my horrible bathroom lights. There's no option to select overtone when you buy Freshadamas, but you can specify your preference in the "notes" section when you check out. If you're not sure what overtone is, check this out: http://www.pearlparadise.com/t-pearlqualityguide.aspx (go down to the "Pearl Color" section).

I'd definitely recommend the Freshadamas because to my eyes, they are very similar to Akoyas, but they're way cheaper. They're also all nacre so they stand up better to frequent wear. Here's a picture of the Freshadamas and the Hanadamas (highest quality Akoyas) side by side - Freshadamas are the outer stand, and Hanadamas are inner strand).

Sortmom,

Thanks for the reply! Your post convinced me to place an order for the 9.5-10 mm freshadamas from pearl paradise. I requested a silver or silver-rose ovetone in the comments. I just realized they were still offering the 15% off so that was a nice surprise. Thanks again!

That is so sweet of you to gift your wife such amazing pearls! I would also like to say that it is a great decision to go for the freshadamas! They are definitely the best of the best freshwater pearls out there! Also, when buying pearls, it is better to go for stores which specialize in pearls (like Pearl Paradise) than stores which offer a wide variety of jewelry.

I am sure your wife will adore the gift! Enjoy :appl:

Excellent advice, sortmon, and great choice GeorgeT! I suspect this won't be your only pearl purchase for your wife!
