For a while now I've been hearing about Gemesis planning on finally releasing colorless white diamonds. Wasn't this supposed to happen a few years ago? I remember seeing a lot of discussion here about it.

Any buzz or updates on this issue? their website still looks like the same old: http://www.gemesis.com/

Lots of buzz. That's what the 'news' people do. Not so much change. As far as I can tell, the availability of 'colorless' synthetics hasn't changed much in the last few years or so and it continues to be true that the manufacturers prefer to make colored stones both because they can compete favorably on price against the naturals and because it's easier to make the stones.

I also heard about this a while ago, I want a new pair of earrings and wanted to try out these lab created diamonds. They are as hard as mined diamonds right? I don't want a CZ or something fake like that.

That's really interesting. By any chance could you explain why they are able to make colored diamonds and not colorless ones?

Gemesis recently reported that white MMD's will not be available for public purchase until the latter part of 2011, Q3 I believe. They were apparently trying to create the right buyer experience prior to bringing to market. Here is a recent article if you are interested. http://www.nationaljeweler.com/nj/diamonds/supply/article_detail?id=26348

Why colored diamonds are easier (relative term) than colorless diamonds has been explained in much better language and greater detail throughout this site, however the basic premise of the explanation is that Nitrogen assists in the crystal growth process. Follow this link for a great explanation from D.NEA. http://d.neadiamonds.com/white-diamond
