What is a good price for custom engagement ring?

I was referred by a friend to a jeweler that makes custom engagement rings. I asked him to get me a quote for making an 18K Tacori setting I loved that cost $3000 retail. He quoted me at $1600 and stated that it would look "almost identical" to the Tacori ring. I know there won't be the same details and craftsmanship as the original, but I'm OK with that, as long as it's close. But does $1600 sound about right?

Have you seen work done by this jeweller that is similar? This will give you an idea as to whether the jeweller has the experience and skill to create what you are looking for. How is the workmanship and finish of other custom rings the jeweller has made?

Price always depends on the design, diamond, cut, colour etc. Would have been great if you could have share the picture of that engagement ring here, can you?
