Well, I''m on to my next jewelry purchase, and wanted some opinions on some platinum loveknot earrings from Whiteflash. I''ve posted before about not being able to wear sterling silver in my ears anymore. I haven''t been able to bring myself to try white gold because even any small ones I''ve found I have thought were way overpriced. I have been looking at these 13mm loveknots from WF for the past couple of months...I would like a pair of classic studs sans diamonds to wear everyday. Diamonds are just not in the budget right now, and I would like to purchase these for myself, since my husband just bought me a Tag watch. I have a birthday coming up in May and I''d rather not ask him for any more jewelry--don''t wanna press my luck, y''know?!

I would like your opinions on whether these earrings seem age-appropriate (I''ll be 29 this year), and if you think the size (13mm diameter) would be too large for everyday wear. Ordering them sight unseen, I''m a little hesitant. I also loathe returning things (I know it''s not that big of a deal, but it''s just a thing I have!

) I''m not a small girl, and my earlobes are detached...not large, but not petite! The WF design has 18k yg posts, which I don''t think will be a problem, as I can wear 14k yg in my ears with no problem. I found an almost identical pair at blue nile with plat. posts, but they''re priced at $375, while WF''s are $195, which is do-able, and I think a far better value.

I''ve attached a pic from WF''s website... oh, I should also add that when I saw "everyday wear" I mean wearing these earrings with everything from flip flops and jeans to business attire. I also have long hair which I often wear down (another reason I don''t want to buy diamond studs yet...I can''t afford a large enough tcw for them to show up!)

Monarch....I really like them!

I think that because they aren''t ''solid'' (have holes in them), they aren''t too big and bulky/blingy at all....with or without long hair covering them up!

You might try doing what I''ve done: cut out two paper 13mm "donuts", lick them and stick them on your lobes, and look in the mirror!

In the end, of course, you''ll have to figure out what size YOU''RE most comfortable with...

Your idea of paper doughnuts was so cute I had to try it! It led me to discover that the little yg hoops I''m currently wearing are about the same size in diameter, so I have a better idea of size now.

I agree, the fact that there is some open space in the center will probably help them from looking too bulky. I guess I''ve gotten so used to seeing ladies my age with .5 to 1.00 studs that these seemed huge to me. I really like that these are "different" from what most gals are wearing nowadays, and I also like wearing things that are unique (although I know loveknots are a very classic style...my mom used to try to get me to buy them in yg before the white metals became so en vogue again).

I know I will have to actually try them on to determine whether or not I love them on me, but I''ve been looking at them for a while now and the more I look, the more I like them. BTW, I''ve never ordered from WF before. I have read through their return policy, but it seems to only apply to diamond purchases, so I''m not sure whether these would be returnable in the event that I received them and ended up not being crazy about them. I really hate to bug the people at WF over a $200 purchase...does anyone know if their 10-day return policy also applies to non-diamond purchases?

Hey Monarch,

I absolutely think that those would be suitable for both casual and work attire. As to the size issue, really only you can answer that. Sorry I couldn''t be of more help.

I wish you well,

Bridget

Thanks Bridget, for your input! You answered my "everyday" wear question for sure.

I think the only thing holding me back from these is possibly the size. I just worry that they are a little larger in diameter than I would like. Don''t suppose anyone knows if WF can make a smaller version, lol!

Sorry I''m being super picky and difficult. Does anyone thing it would be alright for me to email WF and ask if there''s any way they can be made smaller?

Monarch, if WF made a smaller version, I would buy those in a minute! I think 13mm might be a bit too big for everyday wear, at least for me

I totally agree, Michelle. So I guess the issue I''m having here isn''t style at all, it''s the size. Aarrgghh! Why, oh why, do I have to have skin that can''t stand white gold?! Life would be much easier for me if I could just find a wg version of loveknots. Platinum earring hunting has been one daunting task for me so far (and I''ve spent a good six months or so searching.)

When I got my ears pierced in 2nd grade, my lymph nodes in my head and neck swelled up into big knots, and my mom took me to a bunch of doctors, including cancer specialists, who were all concerned I had Hodgkin''s disease! (I was pierced at a mall kiosk with surgical steel posts...nickel allergy big-time.) Of course my mother was like, "this is why I didn''t want you to get your ears pierced!"

I tend to think love knots of that size are for older women - probably have to do with the facts that I only know older women who have them. If they were smaller, they would be great for everyday wear and more suitable for your age.

ETA: we were posting at the same time.

Just the kind of honesty I was looking for, Q. I hate to say it, but I think it''s true...the size of these reminds me of the top half of a "doorknocker" earring, if you know what I mean at all. If they were just 8-9 mm I would probably be ok with that. I think if I were wearing suits to work everyday I wouldn''t have a problem with the 13 mm size, but I am looking for more versatility.

I also want to say that I have looked at several hoop styles...all of which I think are a little overpriced, and I worry that they will "drag" my earlobes down if I got the quarter-size diameter I think I would want for an everyday hoop in plat. I was thinking that with a post style I could squeeze the back onto the post enough that the earrings wouldn''t weigh down my earlobes, I guess.

Hi Monarch,

Those Knots are very nice. I have a pair of tri-colored knots that are about 14mm in length, less in width. And yes, I guess I am now old , but I wore these all the time when I was younger [in my 20''s]. I thought they were perfect for both a professional appearance and for casual. I guess I never thought of them as "old looking". Hey it''s all in what you like! My ear lobes are larger and detached so small earrings look lost on me. Plus with longer hair I think you just can''t see them as well. WF has a good return policy, maybe you could order these and see how they work out. If not to your liking, then send them back. Just my 2c.

I just sent an email to WF. What the heck, ya never know till ya try! I asked if ear shots were a possibility, and whether they could be made with a platinum post and back. I''ll let you know...

Hi Monarch!
35.gif

I had a pair of earings exactly like this a few years ago ("had" because I lost one of them) that I received as a birthday present. They were yellow gold and I would have liked them a tad bit smaller, but I did wear them occasionally.

The major problem I had with them is that they are very uncomfortable to wear when you are on the phone. My ears hurt when I had to hold the receiver to my ear. Since I spend a lot of time at work on the phone, I never wore them to work. Heck, I am on the phone at home quite a bit too, so I never wore them there either!

They were so uncomfortable b/c they are really thick and stick out a lot on your earlobe. If they were maybe half the size (say 6 or 7mm) then I would consider them.

Hi Pebbles!
35.gif

You brought up a good point about the earrings being uncomfortable, especially due to their size. I''m really used to wearing hoops with a latch, not a post. Sigh,
8.gif
I hate to say it, but these are probably not a good choice for me, because I''m on the phone a lot at work every day.

Renee at WF did email me back quickly, and said they have no ear shots, and can only change the posts to 18k wg instead of yg. No wonder WF is so highly recommended here, she answered all my questions in a very timely manner.

The only platinum hoops I''ve been able to find in a style I liked were priced too far out of my budget ($325 and up), and I''d rather invest that much money in a setting with diamonds. I''ll have to check out WF''s ready-set-go studs, but I''ll have to contact my jewelry sponsor (hubby) on that one, lol!
9.gif

Thanks everyone for your input! I may go ahead and order the earrings, Renee said the 10 day return policy would apply, so at least I could see them in person before making a final decision. And if anything, I would have them for occasions other than everyday use.

Honestly, it sounds like you''re iffy on them, so I''d pass. Then you can apply the money towards a pair of diamond hoops or studs. I think a small diamond hoop can be fine for everyday like what you''re describing and may be less pricey than the studs. Good luck!

I vote no. I think they are a touch on the matronly side ... and could end up looking like costume jewelry.

I don''t have pierced ears, but if I ever do ... I''ll always remember what Issac Mizrahi said to me (*cough* namedrop *cough*) when I was helping out a producer friend and being the unwilling subject of an Issac "makeover" ...

Issac: "If you want to look younger, always, always wear dangly earings. They give life and sparkle to the face." He loathed "button" type earrings (even STUDS) & thought an earring had to hang a teeny bit below the ear for maximum appeal ... which is probably partially why I''ve been dreaming of sparkily huggies or french hoop style diamond earrings.

Hey Monarch -- check out Pearlmans''s site for platinum earings. I bought a pair for my sister as a dual 30th birthday/christmas gift for only $125. They were really nice tube hoops. I almost kept them for myself!

Also, if you let Bill Pearlman know what you are looking for, he can help find something for you.

Monarch, I was thinking about these earrings again and another thing to consider is if they are solid platinum, or platinum "tubes" that make up the knot. Solid platinum would be quite heavy and may droop forward. I am thinking of the countless posts about 4 prong basket set diamonds that droop forward, especially in the larger sizes, and no-one has posted diamonds in the 13mm diameter range as earrings - if they had we would all be dead of heart attacks!

)

Just another thing to consider : )

Pebbles, I can''t find any plat. tube hoops on the Pearlman''s site! I guess I''ll send them an email.

Bridget, I would think WF''s loveknots are hollow. They are only $195, and at 13mm, that seems way low for solid earrings. So I don''t know if they would give me the droops or not, I''d have to try them on to really know.

SXN, I''m leaning toward saving more money for diamond hoops. I''ve seen some nice huggie purchases here recently, so that''s an option. Of course I''d love a skinny pair of 2 in. hoops with diamonds, but that''s a future purchase, for sure.

Deco, ha ha "matronly!" I definitely do not want the word "matronly" coming into anyone''s mind when they see my earrings!
