Don't ask me why, but the hubs thinks gold prices will increase. So, he's suggested that any jewellery gifts this year be gold pieces. Seriously.

I heard on the radio yesterday that if the US government had to cover its currency with gold, gold would be worth $6,000.00 an ounce right now. Not being a financial person, I have no idea if this is true (or even much idea of what this means), but I am glad that I had my gold bangle bracelets made when I did (although even at that time the price of gold was rising and I had to pay more than the original price I had originally been quoted!!!).

I am mad about that cross and almost bought it the moment I saw it...but I had "grave moral reservations" about buying it for myself. I feel very comfortable wearing a St. Andrew (i.e. an Orthodox) cross, but I am not completely comfortable wearing a "regular" one.... I was raised as a Unitarian-Universalist, and our symbol is a flaming chalice. That is the symbol I wore around my neck as a teenager.

I think I would feel comfortable wearing an Orthodox cross, and have been looking for one for my charm bracelet, because that is the cross of the church (besides the Unitarian-Universalist and the Quaker) that I am most tied to. I associate the "plain" cross with Roman Catholics, although I know that all Protestants also use it and although some of my relatives were baptized in the Roman Catholic church, and I just do not know if I would feel comfortable wearing it.

On the other hand, I have worn Jewish symbols on necklaces that my mother-in-law gave me although I am not a Jew.... And I wore the wedding ring that was used by a friend when he joined the Roman Catholic Franciscan Third Order on a chain around my neck when he went on to become a Missionary of Charity. (My wearing his ring had more to do with my feelings about him, however!)

So I guess I have some things I could think about .

By the time I did all that thinking the cross would be long gone and I would have nothing to ponder .

Hiya AGBF and other gold lovers!

Who is your favorite reasonably priced source for high karat gold bands? My Mom's 60th is coming up, and she prefers 24k gold. She wears 2 plain 24k bands--that's it. I would love to get her another 24k band with maybe a tiny diamond(s) flush set in the center--she is very rough on her hands (has a massive garden which she loves to tend), but I know it would tickle her to have a little sparkle.

Can you recommend a good vendor for something like this? I'm so excited to buy her a piece of jewelry!

I think I might go with Atlantis Fine Jewelers or even try the newer one, Diana Fine Jewels, on eBay. They are cheaper than Minata. I may be missing an obvious source, though. These two Turkish eBay vendors were the first thing that struck me as cost-effective in 24K, though, coati. Did you see the thread on hammered bands started by the man who wanted a chunky ring? I listed a lot of good sites in that thread.

This lovely Gurhan pendant, featuring a cross within a circle, can also be found on Pearlman''s website! Sharon and I are both swooning over it. I figured the rest of you high karat gold lovers should suffer the pangs of unsated desire, too. Or will someone be buying it and sating her desire? Or is someone here highminded enough just to enjoy its beauty as an observer? Thoughts?

Certainly Deb, and thanks again for your help! I checked out those 2 ebayers--wow on the prices--just great! My mom is Korean, and this is a very special birthday in her culture--she'll be 61 according to Koreans, but 60 in American culture. Koreans are considered age 1 at birth. I have several months to find her a ring, but I wanted to get started and take my time. I'm sure I'll have more questions.

coati, I think these are $995.00 per band. These particular bands are 18K and appear to be available in yellow, white, or rose gold from this site. The site offers some pieces in 24K and others in 18K. I love the 5" earrings although they are "only" 18K! I just don't love the price tag! I am betting that this site would make up bands in 24K, however.

This Etsy vendor works in 24K gold and although she does not have many 24K pieces displayed on her Etsy site, what she has shows that she is capable of working in the medium. She does custom work. The thing that really struck me about her was her prices. I haven''t seen a price like that for a 24K ring in quite a while (not since the price of gold went soaring). I am sure that she could put some gemstones into a 24K band for your mother if you still want to go that route, coati.

I was typing out a contribution to another thread that had only a tenuous connection to yellow gold (its subject being whether yellow gold was appreciated or not). After I had finished working on it I realized that the people reading that thread would probably never use the links I had posted because they probably had little or no interest in gold! So I had an epiphany! I could come here to this thread, and share my links with people who actually loved gold. (It is not necessary to fall over yourselves in a stampede to rush to touch the hem of my garment. I acknowledge that I am a very brilliant woman, but we must keep some kudos for the gold designers after all.) Below is a précis of what I posted in the other thread.

I am going to post some links for the World Gold Council and Gold Inspirations, an offshoot of it. I think that you will see that a lot of the designers who are discussed at great length on Pricescope (and with the most salivating) are currently working in gold and making a fortune on it. The everyday engagement ring may still be platinum, but the woman on the cutting edge of fashion is wearing gold, so that will soon change.

At least that is how I am going to call it. If we both live another five years and the economy is good enough for people to be buying jewelry at all at that time, we can see what young women are then choosing for their engagement rings!
