There was a GREAT food thread over the holidays.

I took pics and intended to post but got sidetracked and never shared this. I remembered it today when making a food comparison over in yon RockyTalky.

Two of my dearest friends are hobby gourmets. We had an incredible meal on Dec 26. I had never seen sushi made before (part of the appetizer). It was really something to watch.

The Appetizer:

Pureed tomato broth with basil and mozzarella cheese balls spiced with rock salt in chilled bowls. Spider roll sushi of soft-shell crab fried in Cajun spice with avocado, cucumber, red peppers and rice. Served with 2004 Far Niente Chardonnay @ 50 degrees.

The Dessert:

Gorgonzolla and maytag blue cheese with water thin crackers, accompanied by grapes and strawberries under a hot sauce of semi-sweet dark chocolate with heavy whipping cream and triple sec. Served with a 2000 Schloss Vollrads Riesling @ 46 degrees (a little more chilled than normal to offset the hot choco).

And... Pouring the choco sauce - my friend the gourmet... in the HOCKEY jersey LOL.

The best thing? My job for the night was the incredibly challenging task of expertly chilling and corking the wine.

What a deal!

LOL. I have to admit... Pizza, nachos and burgers sometimes call me as strongly as grilled veal chops ever did.

The thing that cracked me up more was seeing the printouts of you 2 as SouthPark cartoons under the micro!

Hehe. Actually, I am master of my patio grill. The guests made all of this indoor magic happen.

Holy moly John... that sounds like it was amazing!!! I''m drooling over here!
I''m not making dinner tonight as hubby and I are headed to the casino with friends, but tomorrow night I am doing a roasted chicken with garlic, rosemary, and butter under the skin with onions and lemon stuffed inside. I am roasting potatoes and asparagus Greek-style (as hubby calls it) with olive oil, lemon, oregano, and lotsa black pepper. Simple and delicious just the way we like it!
OH - forgot the best part, we''ll be having Yellow Tail''s chardonnay with it!

Oh no JQ, another vice we share... great food and wine. Looks fantastic. I love Riesling. I can''t see the label, but an Auslese, I presume? Food was simple with a dry aged USDA prime bone in prime rib (ala DF''s thread). Served two reds, a 1992 Siver Oak Napa and a 1995 Sterling Reserve Cab (it was California night). You are prompting me to open a Reisling Kabinett or Splatlese tonight

Paula, stuffed-anything is a weakness in my family. I remember, growing up, if mom wanted dad home early from work she''d call him around noon and let him know stuffed-(X) is for dinner. Amazing how many things you can stuff shrimp and crab into isn''t it?

Crikey Noob. It is indeed amazing. No doubt one day we'll meet and will perhaps be wearing the same thing.

I thought I listed the wines with the photos (though maybe I left that one out). It was a Schloss Vollrads 2000. We were originally thinking dessert wine with the choco, but this one is unbelievable with those cheeses - so I just chilled it as if it were an Austrian Riesling instead.

You know what I keep on-hand for use in a sweet wine pinch? Chateau St Michelle Johannesburg Riesling. It's on the sweet side of sweet, but very inexpensive and enjoyable by non-wine enthusiasts and the wine-sensitive alike. They also have a dry Riesling.

Napa is crazy cool. The 'Leap' vinyards are among my favs. I plan a tour of the valley one day.

Dinner looked scrumptious!

Next time try a nice chilled bottle of unfiltered pearl sake with that sushi!

The dessert looks awesome! Was that a warmed choco sauce?
