Hello all.

I thought you all might enjoy the below video, if you have not yet seen it. (this is my first time posting in Hangout - and I hope it is acceptable to post links to youtube). The video discusses a Swiss company that apparently uses the cremated ashes in creating a "diamond" in memory of the deceased (for a cost of roughly $18,000 US - or more depending upon end carat size).

What are your views? Thanks!

I had read you don't really get a diamond made from the ashes but that they just pick a diamond to send you and you think it's them. Either way, if you are gonna pay $$$ for a funeral why not get the diamond instead? A cremation doesn't cost much and I assume you get the rest of the ashes back.

If I knew with certainty that it was my loved one I would definitely do it. In fact I'd even do this with my cat! The problem is that as of now from what I've read, there's no way to prove that it's a diamond really made from the ashes you sent.

Hi Cherokee.

You should take a look at this thread:

https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/memorial-diamonds-out-of-cremains-anyone-do-this-need-info.87521/page-6

It includes a discussion by someone who grows synthetic diamonds and claims they cannot do it. Then someone from a company that claims they are doing it shows up and fails to provide the proof.

Cremains are actually not high in carbon. Most of the carbon burns off. Ashes can be purified, but there won't be enough carbon and it won't be pure enough to grow a diamond. It is possible that some of these companies are using a small amount of carbon from the ash and mixing in a much larger amount from other sources.

Unfortunately none of these companies that I know of has done the obvious thing, which is to call in a team of independent auditors to observe the process and trace the paperwork and issue an opinion.
