I have not ever watched any of it before...but the commercials for the show about the Great Whites looked pretty cool!

It's pretty fascinating...sharks are very curious creatures and the danger adds an element of thrill.

Hmm... My husband is a surfer, he lost one of his best mates to the first shark attack in WA for decades so we are not allowed to watch anything shark related at all, ever. It sucks because I find them fascinating.

oh dear - that is horrible!! I'm so sorry! I do have a hard time watching the shows where they highlight an attack.

Shark Week anymore isn't what it used to be..I don't watch it as much now. Tho, the Air Jaws shows were excellent. I've had a fascination w/sharks since I was..6 or so. I watch all the lame-o shark movies and help moderate on a shark message board. Sean Van Sommeran posted there a bit along w/some other people in the shark community.

Agreed - Air Jaws is what started it all and they're up to like AIr Jaws 6 or something...but I still love it!

UM TOTALLY EXCITED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is my favorite week on TV and I don't make plans during shark week so I can watch all the episodes. My husband thinks I am insane. I know more about this animal than all of the animals combined.

I heart Discovery for doing Shark Week.

I'm watching old episodes now that I've not seen. Some Air Jaws coming up later.

Show me your teeth!

Interesting article...humans fear sharks but there are certainly a lot of reasons for them to fear us!

Yes, it's a big mess, but when you consider tropic transfer of methylmercury in these apex predators to us, maybe the consumed will out-survive the consumer. Mercury levels in some species of sharks netted off the coast of Florida last year were at 3.3ppm :(sad

I heart Mercury.

It might be the only thing that saves these Apex predators from gradual fringe existentialism due to over harvesting. I'm asian, and I've given up sharks fin soup for 19 years. Can't say I've made a difference, but I think I've personally prevented the consumption of maybe 3 shark's worth of fins so far. It is a pretty pathetic battle.

I love sharks. But I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your husband's friend. I think any one commercial airline crash has killed more people than all the recorded shark deaths though.

Shame DF.

I know, it is scary. I'm not an alarmist and I'm no tree hugger, I try to have as little negative impact on the environment as possible but I'm no fanatic and far from perfect. I am an animal lover, but I think PETA are tantamount to homeland terrorists.
On the ocean pollution front and the harm it's doing to ocean wildlife, I have big beefs with major polluters who are ignorant to responsible stewardship.
Monsanto is one such body that has wrecked more damage as a single entity than anyone. Everyone has heard of Monsanto's Agent Orange and the Vietnam war, but they may not know about the harm they are still doing today as an "agricultural" Corp.
What they are doing to America's food as a result, just do a little research... They are affecting the top of the ocean's food chain, sharks and whales. They are also affecting us, we are the top of the food chain.

There have only been 9 deaths in CA since 1926 from sharks. That said, I still don't swim in the water!

Ah Tristan, I would say you have definitely made a difference. After all, we can't control what other people do, we are only accountable for ourselves and our own choices, but our own choices combined with like choices of others make a HUGE difference, don't doubt that ;))

My Father just got back from a shark dive at Roatan, he travels all over the world shark diving and for the record I think he's NUTS!
I have a completely irrational fear of being in the water with sharks, you couldn't pay me. He say's I'm the crazy one and I'm really missing out on an incredible experience and he's right. One of my Uncles is a marine biologist and between the two of them they love making fun of me....still, I wouldn't wish to harm one.

Do you watch Whale Wars?

No, I have to see that series!

It's really not about the whales as much as it is the sea shepherd organization. But, they do risk their lives to save whales.

I was at our annual Folk Fest last week and a vendor had these sea shepherd t-shirts mixed in with other gear, I wondered what they were all about.
I'll definitely check it out.
Did you see the "Jean-Michel Cousteau: Ocean Adventures"?
