Fingers crossed for your pup, Kelinas. I agree with Alexah, they are far more resilient than we give them credit for. Here's to hoping she is back to normal in no time at all.

I just typed a long saga about how my Newfoundland, Griffin, jumps onto furniture during thunderstorms. Then it got eaten by Pricescope. I am so annoyed! So I am just posting two photos without any story. I thought I had made the story very interesting, too. (I am really feeling sulky and annoyed and sorry for myself...but I had a hideous day. I should be glad I am not one of the people on Pricescope who just had surgery or is about to undergo surgery!)

Like a ton of dust.

I woke up today to my dog being extremely lethargic. Took her in to the vet, who proceeded in doing a head to tail exam, a urine test, and pulling a insane amount of blood from her jugular vein to run tests on.

3 hours later, all we know is that her WBC is a bit high, she seems to have "spiky RBC" that the vet isn't worried about and that she's dehydrated. She pushed 950cc of fluids, into subcutaneous pockets and I wanted to cry when I saw how large the needle was.

I was told to bring her home and keep an eagles eye on her.
She won't eat, won't drink, won't get up.
Waiting on more blood test results tomorrow, but I'm terrified that she won't make it though the night.

I'm heartbroken that I can't take her pain away.

Kelinas, I woke up thinking of you and your sweet dog. How is she doing? I am continuing to send tons of healing ***dust*** to her and am hoping she is doing better this morning. (((Hugs))) to you both.

Re: Random pictures/stories of our furbabies

She hasn't eaten anything since 2pm yesterday,
I'm going crazy.
She is just laying on her side, breathing really hard.
Like she won't even look at me when I'm trying to feed her bacon. :wall:

I got her to drink a little bit of water by cupping some in my hands and putting it up to her lips but otherwise she won't drink either.

I'm dying to find out what the test results were.

Re: Random pictures/stories of our furbabies

Just got the phone call that Dooleys blood work came back- zero problems.
The elevated White blood count was a false alarm and there is nothing wrong with the red count.
Nothing wrong with her pancreas.
Nothing wrong with her urine.
The only culprit now is the fact that she may have a mass or tumor in her stomach
The vet felt her stomach yesterday but couldn't tell whether she had a tumor or if she was just super tense.

My vet can't do an ultrasound until Monday
I've called every vet in a 150 mile radius and only one can see me today - Univ of FL
For an ungodly sum of money that I can't afford especially after how much I've spent already in the last day.

Good god I'm stressed.

On the better side, I've gotten her to eat some wet food so yay for my pup

Oh Kelinas, I am so sorry! I am glad you got her to eat some food though. That's a positive. I am hoping she begins to eat more and improve. Continuing to send good thoughts and healing dust and hugs.

Re: Random pictures/stories of our furbabies

I made her eat (unwillingly, I put wet food on my finger and put it on her tongue. You can tell she's hungry, she just can't seem to eat)

She ate about 2 tbsp. Something is better than nothing right now.
She is willingly drinking water- hallelujah for little blessings.

Yesterday the vet did a urine test and told me it was fine.
I had a voice in my head that told me something was wrong.
Followed her around to get a sample just to make sure...and it is so NOT fine

It's red.
Now I know she's having issues with her kidneys (and maybe it's why she's willingly drinking water???)

Taking her to the vet tomorrow, hopefully get some meds for the kidneys.

Hi Kelinas: Good that you are encouraging water. If she shows signs of dehydration any vet clinic can hang a bag and *gently*(over the course of hours) replace fluid/electrolytes/glucose.

For my dogs, I have used a syringe to place water in their mouths.

Sending lots of dust to you both.

Re: Random pictures/stories of our furbabies

Kelinas-

Griffin had some bad kidney problem, but I was lucky enough to get expert help, albeit very expensive help, from an animal hospital here that has all sorts of specialists. I cannot even tell you what it was, except that they found some congenital problem while doing CAT scans or whatever. It was a couple of years and a couple of health crises back. If he had not had expert and expensive intervention more than once in his life he probably would not be alive now and he has not yet even turned 5!!! His breeder told me his sister, a littermate she kept, died of a kidney problem a year or so back.

If you get a really good vet, your dog may have a good chance! I will be praying for you!

Hugs,
Deb

Re: Random pictures/stories of our furbabies

Azstonie: when I took her to the vet 2 days ago, she was dehydrated. The vet didn't want to give her a IV because it was hard to find veins.
They hung a bag and pushed a litre of fluid in between the layers of skin, where she absorbs it over 12 hours. She looked like a camel with the 2 lumps of fluid in her back.

This morning was amazing. I feel asleep on the floor with the dog last night and woke up to her licking my forehead wagging her tail.

Took her out where she went potty and got another sample, that looked way better.
Took both samples and dog to the vet.
Vet doesn't want to start her on any medications until we do the ultrasound.

She's laying in the grass right now enjoying the cool morning.

Little steps with blessings

Griffin currently weighs 145 pounds. His weight is pretty stable now that he has matured. (He will be 5 years old in a few days.) When we first got him he was only 16 months old and, although at his full height, was (our vet says), "a gangly adolescent". He weighed only 125 pounds. She now visits him and tells him he has become, "a man". She marvels over the size of his neck (which is, indeed, huge) and over how he has filled out. I have to say that I really hadn't been expecting him to continue to grow after 16 months! I thought he had finished growing since he had reached his full height potential! He gets a lot of exercise, though, and is not, I am happy to say, overweight. He is not thin, but he he is not flabby, either. He is just a big dog. Although on the small side for a male Newfoundland.

Champ did not look smaller than Griffin to me. What size is he? And how old is he?

Re: Random pictures/stories of our furbabies

Thank you everyone for the get well wishes!
We have an initial diagnosis- leptospirosis.

Lets just say that the vets here don't seem you care until you light a fire under their @ss. As they told me initially that her urine was fine when in fact, it was far from it.

I say initial diagnosis because it take about 2 weeks to run the titer panels to find out.

I got yelled at by the vet for not vaccinating my dog from lepto, and had the satisfying right to yell right back at him.
Leptospirosis vaccinations have so many adverse reactions it's been known as the worse vaccination side effects wise.
On top of that, the vaccines only guard against 4 of the 200 PLUS strains.
The shots are recommended every 6 months but I refuse
Even with this diagnosis, I refuse to overvaccinate my dog.
She is now on a 7 day doxycycline prescription - she's feeling better since she eagerly ate the food and drank a whole bowl of water!

For now, the ultrasound has been cancelled - per the advice of the head vet. He really believes the diagnosis, I'm willing to see if he's correct.

I tried uploading a picture but ps isn't having it

Re: Random pictures/stories of our furbabies

Kelinas, thank you for the update. I'm so glad to hear this. I've seen that replacement technique and it's amazing.

Re vaccinations, I have two Westies, the world's most allergic dogs, sigh. I only occasionally vaccinate for parvo and distemper which in Arizona only come at certain times of year, if then. Both my internist vet, my allergist vet and our ortho surgeon (our female has both hips replaced) could care less that we don't vaccinate otherwise. Dr Pitcairn's and Dr Goldstein's books are my backup as well as the published studies from the big vet schools. So don't feel bad, I see you did your research 're lepto vaccines.

Check out Whole Dog Journal on line for material on nursing your dog back to health from lepto/illness.

Re: Random pictures/stories of our furbabies

Kelinas, Now she's finally getting the treatment she needs to get to back to good health. You must be so relieved to know what she has. It so scary when our pets are ill. I'm pretty sure my doctor decided against the shot your talking about because my dog is small and not in too much danger of contracting the infection. If we are taking about the same shot she felt it was to risky to give my dog.
