I think I have posted this in the Christmas music thread last year but it still remains one of my favorites. That along with Ave Maria. That song gets me every single time! Does anyone have a favorite rendition of Ave Maria they can share here?

Here is my contribution. Perfect Gift by Natalie Hemby from 2010.

I'm with you about "Perfect Gift", missy. I learned about it here on Pricescope. I do not know why a commercial recording was never made of that song! I eventually found, and bought, a 45 RPM vinyl record of the song on eBay and bought a phonograph with which to play it at Christmas!

Haha Deb, I found my original PS thread re this song. I also love River! So many songs to love and not enough time to listen to them all as I wish I could!

What a gem! I'm surprised none of the big names have picked up on this and covered it!

Joan Baez singing "Ave Maria," from her "NOEL" album. Not operatic beauty, but a lovely simplicity:

(NOEL is usually the first album I reach for each year when I'm ready to listen to Christmas music.)

Thanks for the link VR! I love it!

I'm way late to this thread but it's always a nice one. Thanks, Holly and Deb for keeping it going through the years.

I love Straight, No Chaser. I live in the town in which the group originated and really hope to see them live someday. Thought about it this year when they appeared but either had to work or had other obligations at home. They are on my must-see-live list, though!

I've been listening to a CD my mother gave me called Winter's Gift comprised of Robin Berry and other featured harpists. I absolutely LOVE listening to harp and our daughter was born to a CD of harp music. My OB/Gyn said it was one of the most peaceful births he had ever experienced. (I felt peaceful too, after the epidural. ;)) ) For my baby shower, my husband surprised me by hiring a live harpist for the first hour. It was so lovely.

Here is Robin Berry playing "Greensleeves" live at MSP airport:

Thank you for your informative posting and the link, Monnie. Robin Berry is certainly very talented and I listened to every note of her "Greensleeves" on YouTube. I do think I would have preferred hearing it played somewhere else, however. I found the noises of the airport distracting and annoying. I just hope that the passengers and the people coming to leave them off or greet them at the airport took solace from her music the day she played it there!

Deb, I'm very sorry to say that the only "free" recording I could find online was the airport one. I imagine Ms.Berry and/or her people have devised it as such so that she receives proper compensation for her recordings? Anyway, I didn't realize that until you pointed out that the youtube link I provided was rather frustrating to the online listener. I'm so sorry. I'm not sure where to direct you to find a better recording online as there don't seem to be any available. Maybe your local library has a copy of the CD I mentioned. It is wonderful. I believe she arranged every song with the exception of Pachelbel's Canon in D. Anyway, it's a great compilation and one I'm sure you might like to add to your collection of holiday/winter music. I just find the harp so soothing and peaceful, and wanted to share with you holiday music fans. Ms. Berry has put out other CD's which are equally fantastic, for all moods and seasons. I don't know much about her, but having inherited several of her CD's I can vouch that they are pretty damn good. If I could ever get my hands on a harp of my very own (besides a harmonica) I'd love to learn to play. My mother used to bring me and a chosen friend from elementary school to see The Nutcracker every year at I.U. and I was ALWAYS fascinated by the harpist. I grew up playing the piano, so perhaps missed my true harpist calling...

This original version of "Mary Did You Know," sung by Kathy Mattea, is still my favorite. I think it affects me so because it's almost conversational - as if Mary's sister, or best friend, is talking to her:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFPHIK9ann8&feature=youtu.be

I have to admit though that the pedant in me came out when I was listening to it this evening. Maybe because this version is captioned? In any event, I guess that's just the nature of conversations - we're often focused on conveying what we're trying to say rather than the fine points of grammar - and rightly so. ;-)

I think we all did back in 2011. You were there. But we are getting old and have memory problems. ;))

Now on the turntable: Hot Club of San Francisco's "Cool Yule." A nice break from classical, traditional, and treakly; a nice collection of jazzy tunes, often with a Spanish influence. One of my favorites is Don Rudolfo - our favorite reindeer, ready for a little flamenco. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a single track from this CD on youtube! Look for it if you happen to be near the used holiday CD racks in your neighborhood music store. (I'm sure the music from this CD is also available online. ;)) )

Wait, how did I miss this thread? I made a Texas-themed Christmas mix this year.

https://8tracks.com/distracts/it-s-christmas-y-all

eta tracklist (which you aren't supposed to do on 8tracks because of legal issues, but eh). Note that they play in a different order after your first listen (again, legal issues).

1. Santa Loves to Boogie - Asleep at the Wheel
2. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer - Los Lonely Boys
3. When It's Christmastime in Texas - George Strait
4. Mamacita Donde Esta Santa Claus? - A.B. Quintanilla & Kumbia All Starz (A.B. is Selena's brother - Selena never recorded any Christmas songs so this was as close as I could get)
5. An Old-Fashioned Christmas Polka - Riders in the Sky
6. Frosty the Snowman - Brave Combo
7. Silver Bells - The Polyphonic Spree
8. If It Doesn't Snow on Christmas Day - Gene Autry
9. Blanca Navidad - El Mariachi Juvenil
10. Merry Christmas Darling - The Fabulous Thunderbirds
11. Pretty Paper - Willie Nelson
12. Noche de Paz - Gaby Moreno

Sadly, the Brave Combo and Polyphonic Spree songs I included are like the tamest on their Christmas albums because it was pretty hard to find ones that fit with the rest of the mix. But if you want interesting Christmas albums.... those are definitely good choices.

As a Texan, you had me right up to Polyphonic Spree. I just cannot. See a previous year's thread about Christmas music we can't stand . . . if you want to know. :wink2: :cheeky:

Haha! That does not surprise me one bit. Though in me trying to make people listen to this mix, you'd be surprised how many people are not willing to listen to ANY of it and are like "TEXAS-THEMED!?!?!?! WHYYYYY?"
