So DH and I rent an apartment down by the beach. It''s a great little place, but lately I have been hearing these funny little scratching noises in the corner of the bedroom. It actually sounds like it''s in between the wall?? There is nothing in the corner where it''s coming from and I went outside today but didn''t see a hole where anything could get in. DH says it could be the house settling into it''s joints, but I''ve heard that noise before and it sounds differently. Any ideas? I don''t think I should contact the apartment management since it only happens like once every couple of weeks, but honestly it scares me every time it happens because it sounds like it''s in the house, but I don''t see anything. So what do you all think?

TIA!!

I was afraid it might be mice, but didn''t see a hole... of course I guess it wouldn''t have to be at the direct site of the noise. As long as they don''t get through the wall I don''t care, haha! I am not afraid of mice, but gosh, think of how LONG it would take to catch the darn thing! I hadn''t even considered squirrels, but haven''t seen many around this area!

It''s probably rats! Yick...I know! I''ve had to deal with it myself. Those buggers can get in anywhere. You should have the manager set traps. The exterminator can also figure out how they are getting in. If you have cat, or dog, they will go crazy trying to get to them. That would be your clue that it''s rats, or mice.

you could have rodents that somehow got in...I could not say how but they can. I would get a critter specialist to come in to check things out.

We had squirrels that somehow got into some inaccessible attic space in our old house and I would hear them running around like crazy above my head in our bedroom, and it was so aggravating to try to sleep with that noise!

I was thinking rodents, too, but the noise never moves. It''s always in the exact same area of the house. And it doesn''t happen at the same time of day or even every day. It''s just really scary when I hear it out of nowhere. My mom also said she thinks it''s the house settling and that''s why it''s only in one spot... I dunno... DH said he''s heard it before though and that''s all it is, but I never even heard it till about March.

Birds, possibly? You could have a nest up under some part of the outer part of the house. That might also explain why the noise never moves from place to place. DH and I have a bird''s nest under one of our back awnings above the bathroom window, they will NOT go away! Dh is always throwing pebbles up there trying to scare them away but obviously they''ve built their home there and are not leaving, they''ve been there for the past 3 years now. The only issue we actually have with them is the droppings they leave on the patio underneath, but it is minor enough that we haven''t taken drastic measures to remove them. We can definitely hear them scrabbling around sometimes, though. It''s pretty annoying!

I think it is an animal (rodents/birds). I would contact your landlord.
