Oh yes, I even read an article last week about how cows release so much methane (how pleasant) that they beat out SUVs in carbon dioxide levels for our planet.

I will be eating my steak, thanks.

DKS, remember when Al Gore first began his campaign against global warming?  PETA was on him at once with this whole argument that the methane released into the atmosphere from all the cattle raised for consumption contributes to global warming, they were desperately tryiing to get him to pay attention to that argument and go veg. 

I think a less extreme option might be just to educate the public on the whole matter and for people to try to consume less beef in general.  Everyone isn''t going to go veg over this, just like everyone is not going to go totally green overnight, imo.  Slow and steady...you know the rest. 

The whole organic business has really started to boom in the last few years, and I think as people start getting acclimated to that lifestyle of trying to consume things without a ton of added chemicals/pesticides, etc., they will be more open to also starting to consume fewer animal products in general.  I don''t think the whole in-your-face fanatical approach works well with most people...they like to make their own decisions based on their own research and not be told what to do or how to live their lives.  I''m all for gradual change and education and getting the facts out there so people can decide for themselves how they would like to offset global warming.  Just my .02, no argument or debate intended here.

No I don''t remember the Peta thing with Gore...but I do think it was odd that the concert they did was set up to allow people (CARS CARS CARS) to attend.  I think it may have been insightful to have it broadcast and have everyone stay home tuned into radio or tvs.  To keep the flood of traffic off the streets.  And maybe have some sort of smog test ran simultainously.  But with all the car traffic, I think it may have increased the polution...ironic don''t cha think?

The artists were slammed for the private jets and buses to get to venue...but on a grand scheme of things...their polution was nothing compared to that of the attendees.

My husband has this running comment ...actually it is weekly...he says, "Wow, I think it is a few degrees cooler...that concert really did cool things off a tad!"  He just smirks and walks away all puffed up...like it was a brilliant line.  (We have been 90 plus).

Ha, thanks DKS, this is one of the few issues I feel like I can articulate very clearly on! 

The concert series was sort of hypocritical...I think the message was there but like a lot of things like this there are many points to criticize such as the one you discuss, how public transportation of concert-goers didn''t seem to be encouraged and that the performers themselves were transported there and back in less than green vehicles.  Improvements definitely could''ve been made, but fortunately the publicity surrounding the whole thing has led to a discussion on how things should have been done...so hopefully next time one of these events rolls around the planners can refer back to "hey, remember the Live Earth concerts and how outraged everyone was that it created a lot of extra pollution due to the lack of public transportation awareness/performers coming in in their eco-UNfriendly jets?"  and say, "let''s do it in a more eco-friendly way this time." 

Humans are just slow at progress...no one really wants to be inconvenienced by a lot of change so it seems it has to happen slowly and without too much interference in our daily lives.  You know, it took my DH and I three years before we started recycling since we moved into our current house.  Our suburb is one of the few who does not make it mandatory to recycle, and we were just plain LAZY about calling the village works and requesting some recycling bins be dropped off.  I mean, it was A PHONE CALL.  But it took us until this spring to get around to picking up the phone and doing it.  It was just one of those things that, since it wasn''t enforced, we didn''t really place high on the priority list.  Now that we''re doing it, though, we feel so much better and that we''re actually not so much "part of the problem," as trying to reduce the problem.  So again, I think once people get on a roll with being green, etc., things will slowly fall into a better place.

As far as veggie conversion among anyone I know...I haven''t gone all PETA on my friends and acquaintances, BUT, there are a few of my friends and family who are consciously thinking more about what they eat as far as animal products now.  I feel like if I make someone feel bad or guilty about their choices, there is going to be backlash and they''ll stop being open to even listening to my reasoning of why I don''t eat meat anymore.  But if I just answer their questions honestly without putting their choices down, and I''m respectful of choices that are different than mine, people are a lot more willing to take my points into consideration.  And those are my .02 on that, hee hee!

Hey, I meant to ask you, is your DH a veg too?  Just curious, mine is not...I converted a couple years ago after we were married.  He''s much more open to non-meat dishes now but still likes his chicken and steak.  Again, I just let it go and let him make his own choices but I notice he eats less and less meaty stuff now.

Someone here posted a bumper sticker quote, can''t remember what thread or who it was, but it was something like:  "I''m a vegetarian because I hate plants!"  I thought that was hilarious.  One of my friend''s dads asked me last week why I stopped eating meat and I used that line, it totally cracked him up!  It worked so well in that situation, because he''s the type who I could tell was ready for a big debate, and I try to avoid those at all costs.

Yes, Hubbahubby is a veggie too...(he eats fish-but lately have learned so much derived from China...so it is a NO NO).  I quit the meat thing I think 1986?? and he followed about 1994.  During that time he quit red and ate only white meat.  It was a difficult thing having to prepare for him, what I abhored.  But we were to support oneanother, so I never complained.  We actually eat every american dish most do ...and of course many ethnic ones...just subsitute the soy or tofu thing for the meat.

Hey, they recently published research that indicates consumption of red meat increases joint inflamation.  So those who have joint issues, arthritis, etc.  should omit it from their diet.  My mother only eats red...she has arthritis and will not listen to the study.  That is the tuff thing...about humans and change as you cited.  I want her out of pain...yet she wants her steak.  This is also something pet owners should consider.  Our canines have arthritis....we give pills everyday...a gluc shot every month...and switched them to Salmon food.  It is obvious that she is not in as much discomfort as before.

Having different convictions is what makes us individuals...freedom to follow convictions should be respected both ways.  When injustices or atrocities are involved...a conviction should make the evolution to change.  Sometimes it only incites.  We are all resistant to change.  Our nature.  But as you say, the discussion may evolk thoughts...which turn into action.
