What kind of brown are you after ? Champagne? Cognac? Chocolate? Coffee? Are you happy to accept modifiers or does it have to be pure brown? Will you accept treated or does it have to be untreated? Do you want certified or are you ok with uncertified
Also not sure what you mean by "fair" prices as opposed to "fancy coloured" prices cos you are after all buying a fancy coloured diamond, but have a look at these websites and see what you think http://www.diamondsbylauren.com http://www.fancydiamonds.net If you want cheap and are OK with clarity enhancement, heat treatment, poor cut, uncertified etc, try ebay

Love DBL but the prices are what I'm trying to avoid, same with FD. Just too much profit in their prices- I may as well buy a warmer coloured white- faint yellow, browns should cost less but no one seems to be selling loose ones the same way whites are sold on PS. I am open to the shade/colour and just playing with options right now- I do love a deep honey color or a really warm champagne but even a vibrant darker brown- not too dark chocolately- would be lovely if the cut and shape were great. I would love a great cut cushion if it were at all possible.

ah, OK, but remember that the majority of brown diamonds are mined here in Australia, and at the moment the AU dollar is very strong compared to the US dollar, so that could (will) impact prices for browns so maybe there is less fat in DBL and FD prices than you think.
ETA: whites and coloureds are 2 different beasts and comparing selling techniques is like apples to oranges. |

Litnon has one, he may have more
http://www.litnon.com/index.php?page=view&cat=147 Also, ask Jason, he has a few that he is selling, but they're not on his site. His prices are excellent http://www.selectgem.com/ Ask if he has more. As for big diamonds, those are bought up by the big money dealers, so chances of a good price are slim. Email or call these guys, Yefutiel Davidov is a very knowledgable guy in the midst of the diamond district in NYC and he can certainly get one for you. It's actually a tiny family-owned company and they are all honest people. http://www.idjewelryonline.com/ If you are willing to wait until after Xmas, the NYC dealers will be extra ready to deal during that time of year. |

DBL and FancyDiamonds are at the upper end of the spectrum. In the past (and I haven't bought any for about 3 years or so), you could get very very very decent brown diamonds (or all colours) on Ebay. Make sure the clarity is good. 9/10 times they're natural and untreated. Have a look there. A brown diamond with any of the online vendors is going to be considerably more expensive. To give you an indication, I brought a chocolate brown (certified by a lab) diamond of exactly 1ct, VS2, for $325 about 3 years ago from an Ebay seller I know. I'm sure they're more expensive now but I haven't looked. If I come across one, I'll post it up for you.

I've bought from this Vendor before and got exactly what I paid for (in fact, the diamond was better than the photo)
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FULL-FIRE-BRIGHT-BROWN-DIAMOND-CUSHION-1-08-CTS-/150507805310?pt=Loose_Diamonds&hash=item230af6da7e I'm tempted myself by this one! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FIERY-BRIGHT-GOLDEN-BROWN-DIAMOND-PEAR-1-03-CTS-/180576811120?pt=Loose_Diamonds&hash=item2a0b377870 Be careful with some of the ones on Ebay because a lot have been clarity enhanced by the looks of it.

Thank you, LD. I am interested in buying small cognac diamonds for future jewelry projects, and decent ebay vendors are exactly what I am looking for. It is cheaper to source them out myself than wait till a jeweler does it because it drives the prices up. I'll try these vendors, too, not for high-quality diamonds but for something I could use in jewelry.

Hi,
I have dealt with this vendor bhefore and had a good experience, although I was the one at fault. I bid on a diamond that looked very nice to me. I think it was a yellow. I'm into yellow right now. i won the auction at a very nice price and then worried that the price was too good. I went back over all the photos and finally saw what i had missed. There was a big blow-up of the stone which showed a black spot of good size ina pretty prominent area. I went back and looked at the normal picture and saw a black spot that I mistook for a shadow. Gulp. I e-mailed him with my question and he emailed back that yes it was many small inclusions. I apologized and asked if he would cancel the transaction as there were many bids on the item. He was so nice as to say-no problem- and he cancelled the transaction. I know I did not look carefully enough, so please do that, but, I was impressed that he gave me no grief in cancelling. Thanks, Annette Still awaiting my yellow diamond grading from GIA. And my rubies from AGS. Will post results. No pictures though. |

Now that's what I'm talking about!! I have seen these on ebay and wondered if they were any good. I will definitely keep looking for a big beauty here as a play thing ring. Love it! Thanks for the recommendation!!

You see, this is my point about not wanting to pay the higher retail prices. Excellent! I think if you can return the diamonds if they aren't any good there is really not much risk. Ebay sellers who have excellent feedback like to keep it and work hard at pleasing unhappy customers is my experience. |

Thanks for all of these recommendations. I have been looking at white round brilliants from ID but just through the PS listings so getting a good recommendation helps when so many vendors can be listing the exact diamond and I may have the choice of who to go through. As for waiting until Xmas, that may be possible and what a good tip, thanks. |
