It seems to be rather deeply cut too. One should get depth measurements to make sure it will fit in a standard setting. The setting may need to be custom. I bet it sparkles like crazy.

Cat's eye chrysoberyl: looks like someone finally bought it. I kept on going back to look at it, and it's too big for me for a stacker, so I passed. If you bought it, please email us pics. I've never seen one that was so translucent.

Me too, DJ. Spending within my income is getting old.

+1 on winning the lottery - we should create a PSer pool...if offices can do it, why not forums - likely would be an administrative nightmare, but it would mean beautiful stones for all!

Man, this thread is torture when one is trying to save. I somehow have to realize that I can enjoy gems without owning them. Good thing I live near the Museum of Natural History.

Beautiful color but huge window, no?

That colour is quite something for Kornerupine. Big window though.

I don't think the entire "blanked out" part is the window. There is a window but it is smaller than what one might initially think. In looking at the picture, you can still see the pavilion facets through most of the gem, only that it is sort of fuzzy due to the table glare, giving one the impression that the window is the entire area.

Agreed! Still too big for me, though. It would drive me crazy.

the window would drive me crazy too. I only put it in this thread because the color is so fine and rare for kornerupine, as is the size. Also the depth is right around the point where it might be tweakable, provided that the crown isn't harboring too much extra weight

Ohh I never would've thought it could be the table glare.

I've bought from MC in the past.

I bet the whole durn blurry area is a window.

Actually, I'd be quite confident of it. Look at how there is more area around the table that isn't blurred. If it was table glare, the glare would align with and reflect off of the the outline of the entire flat table, and not leave a little jagged remnant between the center of the table and the star facets. I would guess that the last pavilion facets are well-below the critical angle, while the penultimate tier are just about at the critical angle, and therefore are sort of reflecting some light which is why the two tiers look a little different.

That's my guess.

I hope the buyer knows a good lapidary.

CC I think you are right about the window. I have seen instances where table glare really does only cover half the table leaving the other half unaffected; I doubt that is the case here. Still given the proportions stated it is possible that the window is smaller.

Possibly size & it's well saturated, good color (imho), and has nice brilliance. And because EVERYTHING is going up! :nono:

A little comparison: that spess is $495/ct for 6.79 cts.

Africa Gems lists a dark, not very attractive spess of 6.18 cts for a whopping $1248 per carat. http://www.africagems.com/spessartite-garnet.html

Jeff Davies' largest one on his site is quite nice but without the brightness of the Gemrite one, 3.46 cts priced at $368/ct.

Gemfix has a spess of 12.15 cts, round, nice bright color but a lot of sugar (he rates it VS-SI1, I'd go for the SI part of that), for $318/ct.

Sort of all over the map, except the Africa Gems one knocked me off my chair.

That color is amazing for a kornerupine. I think Precision Gem had a nice green one a few years ago also.

His cutting is so creative, LK! I love to roam around his site. My holy grail would be a stone in his Stag cut, 10mm or more, that I could set as a pendant (& spend all day looking in the mirror).

JF,
I think you had a typo; John's 6.79 ct spessartite on DB worked out to $795/ct for me. It seems expensive to me too but perhaps the price of spessartites have indeed gone through the roof lately. :-o We all know that AfricaGems tends to be on the more expensive side so the sticker shock isn't a huge surprise but I do like their extensive inventory.

I agree - he needs to bring his price down for anyone to seriously consider that stone.

Based on that photo of Jeff's (nice photo as usual btw), I would say he needs to come down in price as well. It does not appear to have the saturation to warrant that price tag, I'm afraid.
