Semi mount ideas for unique/funky pins or brooches?

I just received an interesting sphene, which is so very sparkly, but is also a "marmalade" color in lower light sources. To be honest, it really reminds me of a beautiful insect, like a beetle or a dragonfly. Because of that, I thought it might be really neat to set it in an insect pin or brooch. My sphene is about 2.33 carats, about 7 by 8.40 mm. does anyone have any ideas? Yes, I am one of those odd birds who liked Melissa Leo's Oscar night spider necklace!

thanks!

Then if you like spiders, do a spider. It could be the abdomen. I assume it's an oval.

I think it's something that an etsy artist like Julia Kay Taylor could do. She likes to do organic and interesting designs. Here's a spider pendant she did. To cut costs, you could have it done in argentium silver, or with gold accents.

TL--thanks for the info. Your depth of knowledge/experience is staggering!

Now if only I could get my act together and actually get one piece of jewelry made!!! I have trouble coordinating clothing for outfits but matching mounts to gems takes my inability to "close the deal " to a whole other level!!!

Hmmn..exciting to see a thread about a pin! I don't know if you'll be able to find a semi mount for the pin, but you should be able to find a jeweler that will do a custom piece for you. Julia Kay Taylor is pretty busy though; I'd definitely contact her, but I'd contact a few others on Etsy as well.

I doubt you are going to find a semi-mount given that you are looking for something unusual or funky in a brooch/pin. There are some relatively inexpensive custom bench on Etsy who you can consider though.

I think Scott Schrieber at Two Claws Jewelery - http://www.flickr.com/photos/two_claws_jewelry - does really cool figurative work:

Some examples:
Centipede - http://www.flickr.com/photos/two_claws_jewelry/2965773773/
Fly - http://www.flickr.com/photos/two_claws_jewelry/2966621782/
Bamboo - http://www.flickr.com/photos/two_claws_jewelry/3251660712/

I'm working with him on a project and he is very reasonable, funny, and into his work. I know he gets sick of basic rings and things and loves to take on more creative projects.

He does really nice work. Post pics when you get your pieces.

Hi Erinl- no thread, they aren't mine! Just work I remembered from my jeweler when you said insects and spiders! I would like to own the fire agate wasp someday, though!
