Has anyone watched this? It's fascinating!

look at the cambridge emerald tiara at 20:22 - it's shown in its new state at 20:33, where diana transformed the emeralds to a necklace and earrings. I think I like the tiara though.. what do you guys think?

very beautiful, very stylish pieces, all with more than a touch of class - where they could very easily have been gaudy.

compare that with people like the kardashians with their mega engagement rings these days - money sure doesn't buy class.

Thanks Sonya,
Here's two more videos on royal jewels.

I actually heard the Queen say herself that she didn't like wearing jewelry, and only wore it because she "had to." :blackeye:

She said this during a portrait she was having done. How sad to be around all those fabulous jewels and you "have to" wear them. :knockout:

Thanks for the links Sonya and TL.

I think the queen is crazy for not wanting to drown in royal jewels constantly, I'd accept her job willingly!

thanks TL, I actually watched these right after. the British ones are brilliant but the Russian ones? what I would give to be a tzarina at the height of their empire. they sure knew their colored stones, and how to frame them for maximum effect.

and the Queen, she wears jewelry so naturally (though I think she suits brooches and lapel pins more now than tiaras and etc) that it is a waste. I heard it mentioned in another documentary (it's been a royal sort of day) that she is uncomfortable without her handbag, so maybe she puts more stock into that.

Thank you for posting that Sonya, it was fascinating.

TL, I'm sure it was the documentary that followed Rolf Harris as he painted the Queen's portrait where she said she didn't much like wearing jewels and I think you can see that she hasn't much interest in wearing them. Queen Mary, who had a passion for jewellery wore them so well.

And speaking of royals, I read a bit of trivia that coloured gem lovers might find interesting. Gayatri Devi, who was the glamorous 3rd wife of the Maharaja of Jaipur, was advised by her mother never to wear emeralds with a green sari - emeralds, she was taught, look best worn with pink. So if you're wondering what side stones to set next to your emerald.....

I agree with you Sonya, The Queen does looks more comfortable wearing brooches rather than tiaras. Her handbag is indispensable and supposedly she uses it to convey signals to her minders. Handbag hung over the left arm = happy talking to this person. Handbag hanging limply from right hand = get me out of here. Handbag slung casually over the right shoulder = really enjoying this situation - that sort of thing.

I think it is because of the weight of the jewels? By comparison, our jewellery is minuscule and therefore, light. I hear that a full regalia of gems weights many pounds/grams, especially a tiara that is pressing down on your head for hours.

I just watched all three and they were great. The Romanovs' one was very matter of fact and sad.

Yes, I would be very sore wearing a 1000 carats of diamonds and a pound or more of platinum/gold on me, but who cares. :cheeky: :cheeky: :cheeky:

I agree, the history behind it is very tragic and sad, especially for those poor children.

exactly! I figure they are already wearing shoes that might pinch, dresses that they stuffed themselves into, and that tiara - oh they won't feel it :naughty:

I watched the first one over the weekend - loved it! Very informative. I really love all the parures - something you just can't find these days...

what really surprises me were actually the cameos. I already knew I would love the colored stones and diamonds, but cameos I've never really understood at all. those women sure know how to wear them though!
